JACK ATKIN TAKES FLIGHT B. SCHREIBERS WONDERFUL RACER WINS UNDER SENSATIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. Virtually Left at the Post, Great Sprinter Overcomes Big Disadvantage and Scores by a Nose Bis Crowd at the Bay. New York. September 11. Jack Atkin covered himself with glory in the Flight Stakes at Sheepshead Hay today. Barney Sehreibers great turf idol won the big race of tin- day after having been practically left at tlie post. His run from the rear was so sensational tliat the 12.000 spectators pics-ent arose en masse to cheer his remarkable effort. The oration which greeted the renowned racer on his return to the stewards stand was one of the beaititst public tributes ever bestowed on a race horse in this country. Tlie Flislit Stakes was tlie first hij; race of the season conditioned for all ages, and because of the presence of the younger element, interest in its outcome was enormously enhanced. Todays lield included three juvenile representatives in Dalmatian. Cherryola and Sandrian. In opposition to this trio of youngsters were arrayed some nf the best horses of mature age in America, including Jack Atkin, le Mund, lield Mouse and Arondack. Jack Atkin, at the weights, so far outclassed the lield that tlie race would have been conceded to liim except for the nippy track conditions that iwevailed. added to tlie likelihood of his being left at tlie post. Both militated against his chances, but this handicap was as nothing compared to jockey But-wells reckless run from the rear into the lead in less than three furlongs. His mount survived. In the amazement of. close; observers, but had a close call to keep bis nose in front, as the two-year-old Cherryola was slowly but surely wearing him down at the end. J. T. Irelands crack filly made an cxtraordinarily good showing, against such a wonderful horse as Jack Atkin. Field Mouse and Dalmatian finished respectively four and seven lengths behind the leaders in the struggle, with le Mund. Sandrian and Arondack beaten off. The superlative excellence of Cherryolas race Is emphasized by the fact that this was the tirst occasion this season in which a two-year-old made a respectable showing when arrayed against older horses. Jack Atkin at evens seemed liberal odds, and while this puzzled the rank and llle of bettors, it did not keep them from backing the famous sprinter. That nearly everybody had- a lxit on liim was reflected by the volume of cheers which greeted his "victory. Tlie Coney Island Jockey Clubs card on the last day hut one of its meeting was tirst class. While not heavy numerically It was well balanced, attractive ami varied enough to please the most fastidious devotee of the sport. Prince Gal scored a. popular and easy win in the introductory dash, witli Hacuuet holding forth in the rear. The disappointing running of the favorite evoked plenty of caustic criticism. While the steeplechase developed peculiar angles in the lietting it not only tilled the bill as a spectacle but resulted formfully when Rampart, the 7 to 5 favorite, led St. Kick home. Expansionist one of the opening favorites, receded steadily in the market. After running well up for a mile and a quarter one of the reins broke and McAfee pulled him up witli the other. The Century, formerly one of the notable longdistance weight-for-age fall races, was run under changed conditions. As a handicap it was contested bv a quartet of horses, including such good ones as Moquette. Gliding Belle and Bonnie Kelso. The llrst-named was starting for the tirst time in the colors of S. C. Hildretli. Moquette carried top weight of 110 pounds and. under Dugans able handling, acquitted himself brilliantly. The usual kaleidoscopic changes came with the Inst half mile! of the grass course selling race at a mile and a sixteenth. Juggler moved up from last place and circled his opponents with such swiftness that few of the spectators could identify l:lni until his number was ollicially displayed- as the victor. Mass messed Blackford about considerably, or he would have won. The chief upset of the afternoon occurred in the closing race, over the Futurity course, won bv Billiard Ball. . The widely advertised Barlevthorpe was a starter and an odds-on favorite, lie finished next to last, beaten off after a brief dis-plav of speed in the early running. E. K. Sinathers has been a -regular and heavy bettor In the clubhouse during the Sheepshead Bay meeting. His commission on Moquette was , OIK at evens with John Walters. The same commissioner laid another man 11 to 5 against Bonnie Kelso for exactly ,000. Ilarrv Grothe was claimed out of the fifth race Friday by S. F. Hyman.
