PROBABILITIES FOR CLASSIC : « Prominent Horses in Kentucky Derby to Meet in Arlington Race. ♦ Hopes Entertained That Top Flight, Burning Blaze, Universe and Other Early Casualties May Be Ready in July » All the prominent horses unable to start in the Kentucky Derby, last Saturday, as well as seventeen of the twenty starters, are eligible for the fourth running of the Classic, which, with 0,000 added, is , the feature of the Arlington Park meeting as well as the worlds richest event for three-year-olds. ■ With so many of the outstanding • , candidates not able to start in the Derby and not eligible for the Belmont Stakes, the 1 Classic may very readily play a more important • part in deciding the three-year-old championship than it has in previous runnings. Of the first eleven horses to finish in the Derby, only Brandon Mint, which brought up fourth, is not a Classic eligible, but if the Brandon Farm Stable colt remains in good form it is not unlikely he will be a supplementary • nominee on June 1. Top Flight, i Burning Blaze and Universe, three of the more prominent Derby eligibles during the entire spring, but eliminated for one cause or another within a week of the race, may be expected to participate in the Classic if back in condition by mid-July. When Top Flight suffered the first defeat of her career in the Wood Memerial, her owner decided to race her only in filly events until the proper time had elapsed to bring about her full development. Trainer Thomas J. Healey hopes that moment will arrive by Classic day. Burning Blaze and Universe both were injured at Churchill Downs when going through their preparations for the Derby. The former was cut down in a race and, at first examination, the Shandon Farm Stable star appeared out for the season, but his wound has healed more quickly than expected and if he can be returned to training within a month, the effort will be made to fit him for the Arlington feature. Universe suffered an ankle injury in his final Derby trial and although it was not serious, owner Thomas M. Cassidy declared him from the race and announced that the Wood Memorial winner would be pointed for the Classic. Other well known three-year-olds which did not race in the Derby either because they were not eligible or did not qualify, include Evening, Mad Pursuit, Slave Ship, Big Beau, Indian Runner, Faireno, Proteus, Pair-bypair, Osculator, Sweeping Light, English Knight, Sunmelus, On Post, Sophist and Phantom General. Evening, a filly, won the Florida Derby and Chesapeake Stakes, easily defeating in the latter event Stepen-fetchit and Over Time, two that were prominent in the Derby. Slave Ships nomination, with that of his stablemate, Boatswain, was the first received for the Classic and he has come into prominence by the easy manner in which he won his first two starts this spring. Though injured in his last start he may be ready for the Classic. Pairbypair scored a notable victory in his seasonal debut recently, while several of the others havent seen competition yet this year. The Classic, at one mile and a quarter, is calculated to bring together the winners of the earlier stakes for three-year-olds as well as the contenders in those events at weights that will give all a chance. Conditions of the race state that colts and geldings must carry 126 pounds and fillies 121, with non-winners of a three-year-olds race of 0,000 be allowed three pounds, of such a race of 5,000 five pounds and of a sweepstake at any time seven pounds.
