ASCOT9 S WONDERFUL RA CE MEETING TWENTY-EIGHT RACES IN FOUR DAYS, EVERY ONE OF WHICH IS AN EAGERLY COVETED AND VALUABLE STAKE RACE FOUGHT OUT BY ENGLAND S BEST HORSES Among the most brilliant and fashionable turf reunions of the world,, the Ascot meeting concededly occupies a pinnacle entirely its own, unapproachable in its own peculiar and unshared glory. All through it is "Royal" Ascot. The ground on which its racing is conducted is an appanage of the crown. The meeting is under royal patronage, and when it comes each year it is one of its especial attractions that the King and Queen of England, together with their family and high court officials, journey to the track in great state, to the oelight of their loyal subjects. In its pomp and display it is a wonderful spectacle, aside from its high-class racing. There is hardly a highly placed woman in England who does not look forward to Ascot as the one particular place of all for the disclosure of lavish summer costumes, jealously kept secret until the destined day for their display arrives, in which peculiarly feminine action they also have abundant competition from their fair sisters from the continental nations. This preening of fine feathers in view cf the eyes of royalty is one of Ascots greatest attractions. The Ascot racing is of the highest class. Each and every contest is a closed stake race of value. That is another marked feature of Ascot racing. They have their good selling platers in England, but there is no place for them at Ascot. The fact that the Ascot meeting of this ear brought the winning horses a total of 88,635 for four days of racing, without taking into account such money as fell to horses finishing second or third, shows what munificent inducements the Ascot management tenders owners. It is no wonder thai Englands best meet in splendid clashing there, or that France has for many years sent its champions over for the Gold Cup,, not always. uns, ucessful, either. The.Gold Cup igoverasevere course of; two and--a halfrnilcjarid its winnihgHasnong been held the culmination of a High-class career; It is "for three-year-olds and over, at weight for age, so its contestants race on their merits, with no aid from the art of the handicapper, or skillfully devised special conditions. This year the sturdy htayer Buchan finished first in it, but unfortunately had to be disqualified for interference. It is essentially a race for champions of champions, and there is no more celebrated race of its kind in the world. It is in prospect that we shall presently have a double Gold Cup winner installed in our breeding industry, the now American owned Prince Palatine having won it in 1912, and repeated the great feat in 1913. The following tabulation, giving the winner of every race at the Ascot meeting of this year and other particulars of interest, will serve to show how it is possible to conduct a great and successful meeting in which every race is a stake race of high interest: First Day, Tuesday, June 15.
