M. T. WILSONS TWO TINE C0LT DIMMESDALE AND KIRKLEVINfiTON COME BY THEIR QUALITY THR0PGH THE BEST CHANNELS OF THOROUGHBRED BLOOD AND SHOULD RACE VALIANTLY Dimmesdale, .which so decisively, on his first appearance in public, administered defeat to the educated Oriole at -Belmont .Park in June, is a chestnut by that diligent race horse and progressive sire.j Olambala, and Hester Prynne, by a horse, .whose daughters are desiiied for more .than average success as brood mares, Disguise; Qlambala won ,such good races as the Latonia Derby, Suburban and Saratoga Cup and was, as a race horse, just about first class, and is bred to be a success as a sire. Qlambala is a member of the ever-successful Bend Or line, and his dam. Blue and White, by Virgil, thus coupling the strains of Eclipse and Herod, and next in line conies Madame Dudley, by another Herod horse in Lexington, jind so to Britannia IV., a daughter of about as good a horse as ever won the Epsom Derby; Flying Dutchman, which, it may be observed, is also of the Herod persuasion. Olambala traces in the feniale line to Wagtail, by Prime Minister, ancestress of Sweetmeat, all the Bachelor tribe in Jrpland, the Australian stud success Malstcr and Fair Plays sire Hastings. Olambalas stud success therefore is practically a foregone conclusion. The family No. 21, of which Olambala is a member, was dubbed by Bruce Lowe as an "outside family," but for this same No. 21 family in Volume XVIII. of the English General Stud Book only fifty-live mares are returned. It is I evident, therefore, that this family stood but scant chance with such families as Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, whose membership in some cases numbered well oyer 500. Olambalas membership, therefore, of the No. 21 family is in nowise prejudicial to his stud success. Hester Prynne, dam of Dimmesdale, is a ten-year-old daughter of Disguise, and is but another of those well-bred mares of moderate racing ability which attain to pronounced success as brood mares. Disguise is bred to be a success as a brood marc sire. First of all there is his speedy Domino descent, his dam Bonnie Gal, a daughter of that good brood mare sire Galopin, and lower down in his pedigree appear the good brood mare strains qf Melbourne, through Rapid Rhome and Gladiator, via Queen Mary. Speed and still more speed as we pass back in Dinimesdalos pedigree. Hproijcope, sire of Witchcraft, is a son of the speedy Amphion and his dam Fair Vision, sister to those fast horses Juggler and Necromancer, and so to Queenston, sister to Kingston, by the Melbourne sire, Spendthrift. Dhnmesdale, therefore, lacks nothing on the iscore of pedigree and his continued turf success, bar accident, is practically certain. This, however; has" absolutely no bearing oirJier success as a brood mare, for two of the best brood mares in all turf history, Pocahontas and .Queen Mary, did not win a race between them, but Kerr, as are those two illustrious stud matrons, is of exceptionally fine .breeding. Kerr is by , Uncommon Obscurity, by the Matchem sire, .Kingston, and Uncommon a son of the triple crown winner -and Jspnomy horse, Common. Uncpmmpns dani is ,Princess Mary II., and introduces .the fine brpod mare strains of Hermit, ToxophilUe and Young Melbourne. Obscurity is a half sister, by Kingston, to Peep oDay, Noonday, Nightfall, etc. Kingston has made no great reputation for himself as a sire of brood mares, but his blood in the next remove, as is the case: with sp many of these Matchem line horses, is certain to assert itself, and: one can confidently expect to see, in the near future, a number of great and good race horses put in an appearance whose granddams are daughters of, Kingston. There -is no better family or one more prolific of winners than the Sunflower, by Bay Middleton, branch of the No. 1. Of tills family Gay Crusader, Celt, Voter, Peep oDay, Eager, Positano, Laveno and Orvietp are members, and wjiat with her close-up strain of Matchem, through Kingston, with a sire such a horse as is Olambala, with his .Eclipse and Herod blood, .Kerr should have and most probably has, produced something well wrth while in Kinklevington.
