GNOME BRED IN THE PURPLE Winner of Champlain Handicap Descendant of Bonnie Scotland and Comes Honestly by His Great Speed. Again the potent blood of Bonnie Scotland, head of one of the greatest families of American thoroughbreds, crops out in the recent new turf star Gnome, by Whisk Broom II. Fairy Sprite, by Voter, which defeated several of the best handicap horses in training in the Ghamplain Handicap at Saratoga last Saturday. Gnome was bred by John Sanford, but lecame the property of Samuel Ross and Admiral Cary T. Grayson during the Saratoga meeting last summer. Gnome, while a four-year-old, is easily the greatest development in the all-aged line of the Saratoga meeting, as up to the present meeting at the Spa he was considered nothing more than a high-class selling plater. Gnome was backward as. a two-year-old and did not come to the races until his three-year-old form at the Empire iCty summer meeting. He was then racing in John Sanfords colors. He failed to win at Laurel last fall, but later managed to win brackets at the Pimlico meeting when he beat an ordinary lot. Later at Bowie lie also won and last spring his only race at Pimlico was rather a mediocre effort. Coming to Saratoga with the horses of S. Ross. Gnome was practically an unknown quantity, but the work watchers began to take notice of the handsome son of Whisk Broom II. the day Jie finished third to Naturalist and Boniface, being beaten only two lengths. In his next start ha beat Wyoming and Carpet Sweeper by five lengths in a mile dasii in the fast time of 1:36. That race gained the big chestnnt more friends. In the running of the Champlain Saturday Gnome showed a sparkling performance. Getting away poorly, he gradually improved his position until he won going away from such sterling handicap horses as. Exterminator. Mad Hatter, Naturalist, Dr. Clark and Minto II. That race alone is enough to put Gnom! in the limelight. Gnome is certainly bred for speed. His sire. Whisk Broom II., holds the American record of 2:00 for a mile and a quarter, nnd on his dams side he comes from an extraordinarily fast producer. His dam Cinderella produced the good Jiorses Von Tromp and Peter Pan, the latter the sire of the. two best two-year-olds of the year in Tryster and Prudery. Cinderella was one of the collection of prize English mares belonging to the late J. It. Keene.
