FUTURITY STAKES OF 1920 Has a National Aspect With Candidates from Many States. Tryster Not in It, but Inchcape and Other Star Juveniles Among Eligible s. r f ii NEW YORK, N T., August 18. The Futurity, tlie oldest, richest in traditional interest, and generally most popular of American produce races for two-year-olds, will be renewed at Belmont Park next month with a value of something like 0,000. Instituted in 188S by the Coney Island jockey Club which some eight or ten years back passed it on to the Westchester Rncing Association to stimulate thoroughbred production in all states, the Futurity seems to have accomplished its mission. Youngsters that will or may take part in this years renewal hail from all states in which there Is any thoroughbred production. Kentucky leads in the contribution of material to it and Virginia and California follow in ordsr. Other states represented handsomely are New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvasia, Maryland, Tennessee, Wyoming; Oklahoma, Texas and Nevada. Of these states Wyoming and Nevada are new in the field of thoroughbred production. William R. Coe, who has established a splendid stud with the stallions Iolymeiinn and Uarmonicon as heads, on his Shoshone ranch, has brought Wyoming into the industry. Nevada owes her prominence as a producing state to the enterprise of George Wingfield, who lias assembled the British stallions Honeywood and Athcling and a band of splendid broodmares on his ranch near Reno. A truly national race the Futurity will be this year. And its national character will be further emphasized in years to come. The thoroughbred breeding industry is expanding into all states. Producers of bloodstock are everywhere responding to the insistent appeals of the heads of the army for an increased production of thoroughbreds, experimentation and experience having demonstrated that the thoroughbred is the most dependable military horse. As in the past the- Futurity will be run this year over the Belmont Park straightaway, and it is possible that a dozen or more colts and fillies may start. There are among the 1C1 eligibles at least two dozen that have shown enough to entitle them to start. One or two of the good colts of the year are not eligible. In an evil hour James Rowe declared Harry Payne Whitneys Tryster and Alfred Hennen Morris declared Dark Horse. The owners of Ethel Pace failed to nominate that accomplished daughter of Troubadour and Sunbeam starters in the successive renewals of the Futurity are named through their dams before they are in being, be it always remembered so Leonardo II. cannot take part. WHITNEY WELL REPRESENTED. But even if Rowe did declare the unbeaten Tryster Harry Payne Whitney still holds a strong Futurity hand . He has probably more promising eligible than any other American sportsman. Prudery, winner of the Fashion and Rosedale Stakes; Crocus, "winner of the Astoria; Broonispun, Exodus, Charity nm a couple of others may run. Rowe probably will have an "entry" of two or three runners. Richard T. Wilsons splendid home-bred Olambala colts Dlmmesdale and Kirklevlngton are eligible, as is also Knight of the Heather, a son of igden Madchen, which might oceomplish great things if he could be cured of a mouth trouble. Probably the most popular of all the Futurity eligibles is game little Careful, which, under the silks of Walter J. Salmon, shouldered 127 pounds and won the Sehuylervllle Stakes at Saratoga recently after having taken the Aberdeen, at, Havre de Grace, the Pimlico Nursery and Spring Juvenile at Pimlico, the Clover at Aqueduct, and the Colo-, rado at Jamaica. The performance of the daughter of Wrack Mindful in the Schuylerville was most impressive. The question of the two-year-old championship is still . open and the running of the. Futurity may decide it. The Futurity is the one great race for which Lewis Garth is pointing A. King Macombers fast, if unlucky, Jim Gaffncy colt The Bohemian, which fell at the start of the Youthful at Jamaica and at the finish of the Great American at Aqueduct. The Bohemian recovered completely from his injuries and is training famously at Saratoga. He may be a starter in the Hopeful, the Saratoga Associations richest race, which will be run on August 31. Touch Me Not, son of Celt Dainty Dame, and winner of the Great American, is eligible to participate under the silks of Mrs. Payne Whitney, as is also the 50,000 Inchcape, son of Friar Rock Rose of Gold, winner of the Tremont. And there is in the stable of J. H. Rossetcr of California, a former buddy of Inchcapes, a son of Friar Rock called Montalvo, that has worked with dazzling speed at Saratoga. Montalvo also is in the Futurity. BRIGADIER GENERAL RIDDLE HOPE. Louis Feustel, who won last years Futurity with Man o War, the unnpproached, is training for the 1920 race tc gigantic Light Brigade colt Brigadier General, for which Samuel D. Riddle paid 5,-000 while the horses were at .Aqueduct. Helium,, a daughter of Light Brigade Heliosis, which has won four races for former Senator Johnson N. Camden, the breeder of Brigadier General, is another potential contender. Playfellow, a brother of Man o War, is the most formidable eligible of the stable of James F. Johnson, and Edward R. Bradley may send out Believe Idle Hour, winner of the Clipsetta at Latonia, Black Servant and Balance Wheel. Another western aspirant of some celebrity is United Verde, a son of Golden Maxim Yankee Tree, belonging to the stable of C. W. Clark of Montana. The powerful stable of Commander J. K. L. Ross of Montreal is as strong in potential Fitturity material as any other. Star Voter, winner of the Cincinnati Trophy; Intrigante, one of the top-notch fillies of the year; Hildur and Registrar are eligible. So is Sun . Turret, a sou of Sunstar Marian Hood, for which the Canadian turfman paid 5,000 at Saratoga last summer. A. H. Diaz of nirvana, has a formidable candidate in General J. M. Gomez. Gifford A. Cochran has one of high promise in the New York bred colt St. Michael. James W. McClellands hope is John Paul Jones, a son of Tracery Moneta. Other potential starters are Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sunbrae, a In other of Sun Briar, the Redstone . Stables Sporting Blood, M. L. Schwartzs Carefree. Montfort Jones Bermont, W. B. Millers Adonis and W. E. Applegates Ace High.
