DRACONIS JUVENILE Carries the G A Cochran Colors to Victory in Rich Race Black Maria Accounts for Ladies LadiesHandicap Handicap Steeplechase Steeplechaseto to Barleycorn NEW YORK N Y May 22 Draconis Gifford A Cochrans svift running home ¬ bred son of North Star III and Marie Odile was winner of the Juvenile Stakes at Belmont Park today This is an old twoyearold prize over four and a half furlongs and this particular renewal was worth 101 HO to the winner For the first Saturday of the Belmont Park meeting a tremendous crowd turned out It was much larger than the opening day attendance and both the enclos ¬ ure and the spacious grandstand were filled The weather was delightful and the track at its best bestA A real holidy program had been prepared and in addition to the Juvenile Stakes there was the Ladies Handicap at one mile a handicap at one mile and a sixteenth and a steeplechase over the short course courseThe The various races furnished exciting sport and enthusiasm was displayed from the run ¬ ning of the frist race to the finish of the last lastFourteen Fourteen went to the post in the Juvenile Stakes and they were as good a band of twoyearolds as any shown this year The start was an excellent one and it seemed to be a truly run race and one to pronounce Draconis about the best of his division racing up to this time timeBeginning Beginning well Johnny Maiben had Dra ¬ conis in the front division from the rise of the barrier and he held his opponents safe every step of the way Saxon was away fast and raced along well while Charade the James Butler starter was also in the front division At all times however Dra ¬ conis held them all safe and at the end lie was winner by a length lengthSweepster Sweepster made a gallant bid in the last eighth and for an instant looked as though he might catch Draconis but he tired right at the end while Draconis was home with a bit to spare Saxon was lapped on Sweepster and Charade was fourth only a head before Cheops a stablemate to Sweepster The others were more or less strung out with Whiskery one of the Harry Payne Whitney starters last of all allBlack Black Maria stablemate to W R Coes Continued on eighteenth page DRACONIS JUVENILE Continued from first page Pompey atoned for her recent defeat in the Pimlico Oaks by being home an easy winner in the one mile Ladies Handicap She proved eusily best of the others and it was L K Rosenbergs Extra Dry which raced into second place with Harry Payne Vhit neys Rapture finishing third after being away so badly as to have little chance Rap ¬ ture won the Pimlico Oaks in which Black Marie could only finish third thirdTaps Taps from the Glen Riddle Farm Stable began fast but Albert Johnson almost at onco eased her back and Patricia J and l irst Aid raced up to her Black Maria had started a bit sluggishly but Fator took her to the outside with a rush that saw her up with the leaders before the turn out of the back stretch was reached reachedRapture Rapture acted badly at the post and at the rise of the barrier she wheeled and before she could be straightened out she was a bad last The others were all in fairly close order and the filly was at a distinct disadvantage disadvantageTAPS TAPS DROPS BACK Before the stretch was reached Taps began to tire and drop back and when beaten Johnson eased her up to have her finish last Black Maria when she found her way to the front was rushed right along by Fator until swinging for home she had the race won Ethereal made a challenge near the stretch turn but tired under a drive while Extra Dry responded gamely to be second two lengths back of Black Maria llapture was seven lengths farther back in third place but her misfortune at the start was an excellent excuse for her showing showingBob Bob Smiths Golden Spire son of Golden Broorn and Glory Maid was winner of the mile a sixteenth handicap when by a great rush through the stretch he outstayed old Cherry Pie from the Greentree Stable with Harry Payne Whitneys Acrostic saving third place from By Hisself Five went to tins post and Frederick Johnsons Quatrain with Sande up wheeled at the barrier and was left at the post postBy By Hisself took a good lead at the start and Cherry Pie and Acrostic followed him with Golden Spire rating along lengths back of them Fields content with his position positionBefore Before the stretch was reached By Hisself began to tire and there it was both Cherry Pie and Acrostic gained on him The old son of Chicle holding Acrostic safe looked all over a winner Then when inside the final eighth Fields made his winning drive with Golden Spire He had timed his rush to a nicety and in the final strides he passed Cherry Pie to win going away Acrostic readily beat the tired By Hisself HisselfGOOD GOOD AND PLEXTY STEEPLECHASE STEEPLECHASEBarleycorn Barleycorn racing for Joseph E Widener was winner of the Good and Plenty Steeple ¬ chase making the Widener score perfect for the Broad Hol ¬ low Stable unseated Franklin at the front field Liverpool LiverpoolFrom From the start it was Boatman and Isis that set the pace but Coningsby and Barley ¬ corn the Widener pair were not far away The others were in fairly close order with old Minata bringing up the rear rearAt At the third jump Isis made a bad landing that almost bounced Mahoney from the sad ¬ dle while going to that same fence Barley ¬ corn rode Boatman a bit close keeping him well over in the inside It did not take Isis long to recover her position in the running j but in the meantime Boatman had drawn j away slightly and both Barleycorn and Con ¬ ingsby were after him himRounding Rounding the lower end of the course Barleycorn raced past the Brookmeade jumper and in the backfield Coningsby also went on past while Isis was right with Boat ¬ man Then at the last back field jump Coningsby bore out badly losing much ground There Mergler called on Boatman again and he was giving chase to Barleycorn
