BELMONT STAKES NEXT Third of 50000 Specials to Be Run June 12 Pompeys Chance to Redeem Him ¬ self Other Important Fixtures to Be Run Shortly NEW YORK X Y May 22 With the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby decided the eyes of the turf world are now focussed on the Belmont Stakes to be run on Saturday June 12 flie closing day of the current meeting of the Westchester Racing Association AssociationThe The Belmont Stakes is not only a richer fixture than cither of its predecessors its value this year will be approximately 05000 It is decided at the true Derby dis lance of a mile and a half and furnishes a fitting climax to the spring series of three yearolds features that are so graded that sprinters as well as stayers share in the spoils spoilsIt It would take a superior colt to win all of these events in any one year Man o War could have done it and there are some who believe Bubbling Over capable of such a feat Unfortunately however the Kentucky Derby winner was declared out of the Bel inont Stakes last fall and the public must wait for another occasion to see whether the son of North Star III can stay the real Derby distance The educational value of spring races of the character of those offered in Maryland Kentucky and New York is great Breeders will find them useful as a guide Experts will encounter startling surprises in the an ¬ alysis of the pedigrees of the various win ¬ ners in fact it is not nece ssary to go beyond tUe result of the Kentucky Derby this year for statistics that are staggering in the light of expert opinion expressed from time to time timeSOME SOME BREEDING YAGAKIES Those who have been fond of characterizing the Domino line as purely a contributor of speed will find food for thought in the fact that Bubbling Overs first second and third dams are closely akin to Domino Sweep by Ben Brush Pink Domino by Domino got Beaming Beauty the dam of Bubbling Over Beaming Beautys dam Bellisario was by Hippodrome a son of Commando one of Dominos greatest sons and Bellisario was from Biturica by Hamburg whose dam Lady Reel by Fellowcraft was a half sister to Domino both being from that great mare Mannie Grey by Enquirer EnquirerBiturica Biturica is the best known element among the dams in the pedigree of Bubbling Over She produced the noted race mare and ma tron Maskelte winner of the Futurity and other stakes for James R Keene in this country Maskette is carrying on in France for A K Macomber who bought her from the late William K Vanderbilt who in turn procured her along with other fine mares I from the Castleton Stud when he established his fine breeding stud at Poissy near Paris twenty years ago It will be interesting to watch the career of Bubbling Over 1C lie develops into a Cup horse and Edward Riley Bradley his breeder believes he can run all day it will be another feather in the cap of Domino and his descendants descendantsThough Though Pompey performed so disappoint ¬ ingly at Churchill Downs the public will give Uie Coe threeyearold another chance before they classify him as a sprinter This chance will came in the Belmont Stakes for which ho will now get a special preparation If he fails in the Belmont his place in turf history will not be so exalted no matter how brilliantly he may perform over shorter dis ¬ tances Pompey was a good twoyearold and he still has a lot of friends So has Chance Play one of his rivals which has been handled sagaciously dodging the early stakes and trained with a single purpose in view that of winning the Belmont This giant son of Fair Play should be at the top of his form by the middle of June and the horse that beats him will be the hero of the spring racing season in the East EastCANTERS CANTERS POOR SHOWING SHOWINGCanters Canters loss of form is not hard to under ¬ stand This colt which shared the limelight last fall with Pompey Bubbling Over Chance Play and Flight of Time had a most strenu ¬ ous campaign last year and wound up the season with a devoted following His record of victories beginning early in the spring and culminating late in the fall was a testimonial to the skill of Harry Rites who trained him That the colt should not be generous in his racing or training this year would be ex ¬ pected by those who think that twoyearolds of whom much is expected later on should not be ovcrcampaigncd as juveniles It is likely that the bruising race with Rock Man at Havre de Grace knocked this good son of Wildair out for the time being His races in the Preakness and the Derby would tend to that belief In any event Harry Rites will know what to do with him himA A generation ago we had a trainerowner named Joe McMahon whose acumen made him an outstanding figure on the turf though he never had many horses and was far from being a rich man If any of his charges showed an aversion for track work he sent them back to the barn and there they stayed until they were willing to gallop cheerfully What he would do with a horse liki Sarazen which will not even go on the track accompanied by other animals in Max Hirschs stable is a problem problemThat That the Belmont Stakes will be the out ¬ standing feature of the Westchester meeting goes without saying but it is not the only attraction of magnitude for threeyearolds as the Withers Stakes worth in the neigh ¬ borhood of 10000 is to be run on Wednesday of this week It has practically all the cracks engaged Perhaps Pompey and Chance Play may dispute it with Display Blondin Haste Color Sergeant Post Time Dress Parade Crusader Flight of Time Banton Vespasian Navigator and other prominent eligibles There is a world of speed in the Withers this year and the struggle for it should be In keeping with the traditions of the event which was inaugurated in 1S74 at Jerome Park when it was won by Joe Donohues Dublin DublinOther Other fixtures to be decided this week arc the Houquet Stakes 2000 added for two1 yearold fillies at five and a half furlongs on Tuesday the Hollis Claiming Stakes 2000 added for threeyearolds and over at threequarters mile over the main course on Thursday and the Charles Appleton Mem ¬ orial Steeplechase of a value of 10000 at about two miles and the Keene Memorial Stakes 000 added for twoyearolds at four and a half furlongs straight will be the features for Saturday SaturdayThe The Appleton Memorial has a bumper entry and a thoroughly representative field of chasers will go to the post It should be a real race with Lizard Labrador Autumn Bells Relentless MacCarthy More Upsal Carabinier Gunboat Dunks Green Rip and other fencers of quality at th lr best In the Keene Memorial the pick of the Eastern juveniles will try conclusions It should be one of tho most interesting daya racing of the season and is sure to attract a bumper crowd as Belmont Park was nevnr so beau ¬ tiful as it is this spring
