KING NADI SUPERBLY Wins Grainger Memorial Handicap in Decisive Fashion Beats Princess Doreen and Cap ¬ tain Hal in Fast Time Second Feature Bace to Arcady LOUISVILLE Ky May 22 King Nadi added 11550 to his earnings this afternoon when he accounted for the Grainger Mem ¬ orial Handicap with 10000 added at a mile and a quarter and won in decisive fashion from Princess Doreen with Captain Hal in third place and Chittagong following There were seven starters and King Nadi ran the distance in 2 04 04King King Nadi was clearly the best at the dis ¬ tance He raced in close pursuit of the speedy Captain Hal during the first mile and thereafter came away to win well under restraint He displayed an inclination to boro in towards the rail and it accounted for him bumping Deeming during the early stages He was well clear of Captain Hal when he came over towards the rail in the stretch It was the second consecutive vic ¬ tory for King Nadi in the Granger Memorial MemorialCaptain Captain Hal displaying fine speed raced into a good lead at once pursued by Deem ¬ ing and King Nadi with Princess Doreen in a forward position Deeming dropped out of it at threequarters and gave way to Princess Doreen Captain Hal was still going strongly approaching the stretch but King Nadi was under restraint and when R AVil liams called on him he readily dashed past the leader but Williams did not take much chance in the stretch and hustled him hard Princess Doreen made a valiant effort in the last quarter and did succeed in overhauling Captain Hal but did not seriously threaten King Nadi Moonraker finished lame He had raced well for half a mile milePrincess Princess Doreen earned 1500 for finishing second and Captain Hal received 800 Chittagongs portion of the stake was 275 275Todays Todays attendance rivalled the best that has been at Churchill Downs excepting on Derby days Ideal conditions for the sport prevailed and the small fields of evenly matched starters in the different races ac ¬ counted for a voluminous inutuel play The racing was spectacular in most instances the winners at times being forced to their utmost to land the purses pursesThe The Zelbach Hotel Handicap at three quarters and carrying an endowment of 2000 added served as the secondary feature and brought to the post some of the crack sprinters at the track It produced one of the best contests of the afternoon Brown Sugar began tiring and Sandy Man passed him The latter made a strong bid in the last sixteenth but just missed getting up Lee O Coiner was ridden wide but finished of tlie weakly ridden Brown Sugar Tan gara closed a big gap but Energy did not figure strongly in the running runningThe The Long Ridge Stables Scampaway was victor in the opener bringing to the post eleven platers to race a mile and seventy yards Scampaway raced is if much the best and wore down Gladrags with ease when he was called on in the stretch and won with much in reserve Gladrags showed the most early speed but found the distance too far and he barely saved second place from the fast finishing Kajaba The latter raced in last place for fiveeighths and then closed ah immense gap Had Canf ield kept him closer up in the early stages he would have given the winner a stout argument argumentShark Shark Was accorded confident support and racing in best form under competent riding he won from Broomster but he had to be roused hard during the last sixteenth to accomplish his victory Happy Top finished in third place Shark was restrained but followed Marvin May the leader closely in the early stages He sprinted into the lead without great effort when he rounded into the stretch but began tiring in the last seventy yards and had to be urged hard to outstay the fast finishing Broomster The battle for third place was spirited between three with Happy Top beating Elsass by a nose Marvin May quit almost to a walk in the stretch after a high display of early speed speedE E B McLeans Floranada scored a decisive victory in the maiden twoyearold race when she won as her1 rider pleased from Florida Gold with Coohogan in third place Floranada was away well and took com ¬ mand in the first eighth drawing out there ¬ after to win with much in reserve Florida Gold followed her closest for the entire way but was tiring near the end Coohogan would have been second had he been more alert in the early stages stagesPete Pete Coynes King Gorin II a popular fa ¬ vorite in these parts had the call in the mile and a sixteennth race which brought to the post some of the higher regarded platers He won well in hand from Moms Boy During the earliest stages of the race King Gorin II followed Moms Boy The latter at one stage had taken a five lengths lead but King Gorin II wore him down with ease when called on and was well in hand at the finish Cloister was best of the others and finished in third place
