CHICAGO LARGELY REPRESENTED AT AURORA SEAGRAM STABLES HAPLITE WINS KINGS PLATE SPECTACULAR FINISH Haplite Outstays Attack in Hard and Furious Drive Brilliant Assemblage Turns Out Outfor for Canadas Greatest Bace Baceand and Woodbines Opening TORONTO Ont May 22 Another victory was scored for the Seagram Stable in the Kings Plate the sixtyseventh running of this famous old race Haplite outstayed Attack by a neck after a furious drive in which the first two fought it out from the head of the stretch to the finish Ten lengths back of the first two was Taurus and then followed Davenport beaten off another three lengths lengthsA A brilliant assemblage turned out despite an unpleasant afternoon A drizzling rain fell intermittently but this did not dampen the ardor of the big crowd The Kings Plate was scheduled as the fourth race and it brought out a field of fourteen The Sea ¬ gram Stables horse was always favorite and at post time the public were accepting very short odds on their choice The favorite won but the victory was not the easy thing many looked for The field was big and fractious at the post and caused a delay of six minutes before starter Cassidy caught them aligned When the barrier was finally released they began in a compgact bunch Mooney alert at the post had Attack off with the leaders and rounding the first turn he sent his mount to the front and at the turn into the back stretch had a lead of a length and a half Erickson called on Hap ¬ lite at this stage and then took hold of the latter content to follow the pacemaker Not until straightened out for the final dash through the stretch did Erickson make his move When he did Haplite responded with splendid courage and gradually wearing the leader down got his head in front inside the sixteenth post and kept it there Attack bore over a bit right at the end She was a tired filly The race was truly run and devoid of interference and the best horse undoubtedly won wonPRESENTED PRESENTED WITH SILVER CUP CUPAfter After the race Lieutenant Governor Cock shutt presented to Edward Seagram the hand ¬ some silver cup which goes to the owner of the wining horse The King Guineas were presented by A E Dyment president of the Ontario Jockey Club ClubThe The Seagram Stable started its campaign on the Canadian circuit by running one two In the Spring Handicap a dash of three quarters for threeyearolds and over Digit and Gaffsman which were coupled as the Seagram entry were well supported by the public and went to the post favorites over their rivals When the start came Schaefer got Digit off in front and he remained there Sport Royal kept him close company and furnished keen contention to the top stretch where he began to tire In the final eighth Gaffsman moved up but could never get to Digit which beat him by half a length Mr Pepp after a slow beginning finished fast in the last eighth and was third beaten a length for second place Then came the im ¬ ported racer Mothers Son SonA A THRILLING FINISH FINISHThe The Helter Skelter Steeplechase furnished a stirring finish when Veitsch brought Irish Jig up going to the final obstacle and in a hard drive outlasted Herriard to win by a head Rocking Horse had all of the early speed He was sent to the front when the start came and jumping well held command until after taking the fourteenth jump when ho began to tire At this stage Herriard looked a certain winner but when it came to a finish Veitch put it all over the rider of Herriard The latter was undoubtedly best but was the victim of a bungling ride He was messed about the entire distance and Preece made three or four different runs with him first moving up on the inside and then on the outside In the last twenty yards Veitch kept fumbling with his cap which had slipped down over his eyes and Irish Jig slowed up a bit He would havo won further off but for this thisIjisterine Ijisterine scored a runaway victory in the Goodwood Plate Beginning in front Hast ¬ ings rushed her into a commanding lead the first eighth and she was never afterwards headed At the finish she was tiring and Continued on twentieth I SPECTACULAR FINISH Continued from first page had to be ridden out to beat Evermpre by a scant length The latter responded with good courage under punishment and at the finish was gradually wearing the winner down Fletir de Lis one of the Seagram entries was third beaten by three lengths for second place There was a bit of bump ¬ ing directly after the start which interfered with their chances somewhat Attica the Ross entry started from the extreme outside and was carried wide all the way Another wayAnother stirring finish came with the run ¬ ning of the Victoria Stakes 5000 added for twoyearolds at fiveeighths Jopagan running in the colors of A G Weston was the winner by the smallest of margins from Landlord which in turn beat Upsetta by a head Upsetta took the lead at the start and led into tho home stretch where Land ¬ lord caught and passed her At the eighth post it looked a certain thing for the Ross colt but at the end he tired and Jopagan closing with a rush on the outside just managed to get up in the final stride to win by a nose It was a very tight fit and the winner was in doubt until the official plac ¬ ing was displayed The stake was worth 4370 net to the winner This was the first time in twelve years that Weston sent a horse WoodbineAnother to the post at the Woodbine Another surprise came when Blacksmith won the sixth race He was one of the out ¬ siders and his chances were given but slight consideration Speculation was divided be ¬ tween Care Free and Triumph the former be ¬ ing favorite Ensile quick to break was off with the leaders and at the half pole caught and passed Cave Woman Rounding the far turn Romanelli sent Care Free up and entering the home stretch the favorite looked to have the race at his mercy Eni sile hung on gamely however and at tho eighth post Care Free began to tire An ¬ other contender loomed up in the final eighth however in Blacksmith which came from behind with a rush and passing Ensile In jtl e last fifty yards won going away by a length and a half Cave Woman was third Triumph was never a factor and ran a dull
