LARGEST MIDWEEK CROWD ♦ Witnesses Some Exceptionally Good Racing at Latonia. ♦ Hose Hill Purse Results In an Unexpected Triumph for Malcolm II. Jr. — Pigeon Wing II. Ruus Out. PATONIA, Ky., June 17. — The largest week day crowd of the current meeting, one that only narrowly missed surpassing the greatest previous off-day patronage, witnessed some exceedingly fast racing conducted under ideal conditions. The track was at its heft and while the performers were not the champions of the local colony, they provided wholesome sport from the first to the last race. The Pose Hill Purse, an allowance race for three-year-olds at three-quarters, occupied the place of honor on the program and resulted in an unexpected victory for Malcolm B. Jr. He triumphed at the direct expense of Musician, which headed the two to five favorite. Pigeon Wing II., for second place. While the winners effort was a smashing one. Pigeon Wing II. might have made good for his hundreds of backers if the diminutive Sammy Steele could have prevented the choice from running out on the stretch turn. He was racing head and head with the winner in front of the others when he elected to race almost to the outside fence and Steele was forced to take him up sharply to break his run toward the outside. The winner covered the distance in 1 :11% and those who hacked him were rewarded with odds of better than 8 to 1. The three-year-old Mally Jane, going in her bent form, won the opening race at three-quarters, winning at the end with something in reserve. Pondelle finished in second place, with the unlucky Dolly Pay third. Twelve maiden two-year-old colts and geldings met in the second race at five-eighths. Porridge, well proportioned son of Theo. Cook and Sweet Plossom, was an easy winner. He negotiated the distance in 1 :00%. winning by more than one length from Hydromel, with Pa Morte third. The latter wrested the pacemakers place from the winner in the back stretch, after Marengo showed the way around the first two turns, but the final eighth found Broad Axe unable to withstand the final challenge of Marengo. Third position fell to Anona. The Madison Road Purse, offered as the fourth race, attracted seven top notch two-year-old fillies and provided a mild surprise when Sincerely was first to complete the five-eighths. Next came Polly Sue, with Euphrasia third. Among the beaten four was Forest Nymph, heretofore unbeaten, but she bad excuses galore in that she began slowly and, after running an eighth, stumbled badly and only narrowly missed falling. She had no chance to give her best at any time. Sincerely showed herself to be possessed of a fine article of speed, as Willie Pool found it not like an effort to take her to the front soon after the break and there she did her running to the finish. Lady Carolyn, under a daring ride by Ie Canfield, won the sixth race at one mile and seventy yards for which I ongport. which finished second, was the favorite. The winner got to the front only a short distance from the finish and held to a slight advantage doggedly as Longport continued to threaten. Iraq was third. The third edition of the Latonia condition book was issued today. The book covers the period from June 10 to 2G, inclusive. The stewards fined owner Q. Watts 0 for not providing a rider for bis filly Flying Spark at the time prescribed by the rules. Jockey E. Benham is riding with an injured foot not serious enough to interfere with his work.
