PAULA SHAY BEATEN — « Heavily Backed Favorite Meets Enexpected Reverse. ♦ Flag Lieutenant Takes Her Measure — Evenly Matched Fields Produce Excellent Racing. 1 COPLINSVILT/E, 111.. June 17.— A claiming race, at a mile and a sixteenth, brought out the better grade of platers at the track and served as the feature of Fairmounts racing this afternoon. It resulted in a big upset when Paula Shay, backed to the exclusion of the others, was beaten handily by Flag lieutenant. Paula Shay had to be roused hard all during the last eighth to last it out for second place as Firetoma was pressing her hard. During the early stages Paula Shay flattered extensively by maintaining a long lead, but Flag Pieutenant was always in close pursuit and. when called on. he took command with ease and drew away decisively in the last eighth. A terrific storm during the night changed track conditions, but the perfect drainage permitted racing to be held over a slow course that rapidly improved during the 1 afternoon. While no outstanding feature was down for decision, the evenly matched fields in the different races, brought about close finishes and spectacular contests. SEVERAL DISAPPOINTMENTS. Disappointments came in several of the dashes. The failure of Porto de Gro. a pro-j nounced favorite, to start with the others, resulting in his bing left at the post, was costly to the public. Other offending choices included Captain Haney in the initial dash. Shasta Grafton in the second, and Paula Shay. The biggest field to start during the afternoon was in the sixth race. Ten accepted, and it resulted in victory for Odd Seth racing in his best form to beat Colonel Winn and San Carlos. This trio were driving to the limit, and Odd Seth just won by a neck. The opening race brought the first injury of the meeting and came when the horses had reached the post. Amir suddenly became fractious and unseated jockey Geving. In falling he collided heavily witn his mount and sustained injuries about the head. He was rushed immediately to a local hospital. Amir was captured before going half a mile and Froggatte was. substituted for the injured riaer. Amir raced forwardly in the race and succeeded in finishing third, being beaten at the end by Lady Praxted and Colonel Schooler. Captain Haney was a pronounced favorite in the race, but he was ridden poorly and never had full opportunity to race in his best form. MAJOE S RADIATES. Majoe was victor In the second race that brought to the post maiden two-year-olds. He had the race won when the leaders raced wide at the stretch turn. Kum Kalessi. an outsider, just managed to outstay Shasta Grafton and the latter was lucky to finish a nose in advance of ILidiance for third place. Pilly Mann, backed to the exclusion of the others in the third race, won with commanding ease after having led for the entire distance. Huey finished second and Shasta Pox was in advance of the others. The winner raced as if best and, taking command at once, showed the way throughout. Huey suffered some interference in the early stages, but came around the others after going half a mile and finished fast. Shasta Box always held the others safe. Porto de Oro, favorite in the fourth race, caused an upset when he was left standing at the post as a result of his stubbornness and lack of alertness of his rider. He allowed him to wheel when the start came, after the horse had tired out one of the assistants. Itajah was the winner after a hard race, to wear down Trapdale, the early leader. Pryndear, after being in close quartets during the stretch, managed to finish in third place. Mayor Arthur J. OKeefe of New Orleans, an ardent racing enthusiast, was an arrival this morning from the Crescent City with a party of friends and will remain until after the running of the Fairmount Derby. Mayor OKeefe will leave for Chicago Saturday night to attend the Km diarist Con-sTreaa While Is St. Louis. Mayor OKeefe will visit his relatives. Island Fairy was sold this afternoon privately by Sam Louis to J. II. Schoppen. * ■ -
