DISQUALIFY JOLLY ROGER + Set Back for Interference in the Bay Side Steeplechase. * Riding of Mergler on Fredtlcn Roek in the Same Rare Likewise Comes in for Strong Criticism. ♦ NFW YORK. N. Y.. June 17.— A disqualification and a bit of carelessness on the part of the stewards at Aqueduct seriously marred the running of the Bay Side Steeplechase Handicap at Aqueduct today. Jolly Poger, from the Greentree Stable, was disqualified for crossing Casper at the last jump. Then, after this disqualification, the rule was not carried out in disqualifying his stablemate Hrantome. which had finished third. The stewards had left the stand without having corrected the mistake and it was some time before Prantome was also disqualified as the rule demands, and the place awarded the Prookmeade Stables Fredden Pock, the only other starter. It was another decidedly chilly day at Aqueduct, and top coats were necessary, but a big crowd was out and there was no end of enthusiasm. This same Bay Side Steeplechase was further a most disappointing one by reason of the manner in which Fredden Pock was ridden by Charlie Mergler. His mount was rank in the early stages, and he fought him back and pulled him to the outside of the course in an effort to place him. This took more out of the horse, probably, than letting him run would have done, and finally, when it was too late. Mergler called on his mount and he had choked him so long that the horse had nothing left. Prantome went out to set the pace for Jolly Poger and each time that Mergler permitted Fredden Pock to run he was in second place, but being snatched about in a disgraceful fashion. Casper end Jolly Poger were not far away and, while they were being placed, it was being done properly and without the unreasonable fighting of Mergler. This taking back naturally interfered a little with the jumping of Fredden Pock, and at the water he took off a stride too soon, but he reached and made the fence successfully. In the last turn of the course both Gasper Continued on thirteenth page. DISQUALIFY JOLLY ROGER Continued from first page and Jollv Roger moved up and at the same tim Brantome tired. Jolly Rover went to the front and made the turn into the front of the field, but Casper was close after him and on the inside. doing to the last jump, Ferguson crossed over sharply with Jollv Roper and all but threw Gasper into " the wing. Safely over. Jolly Roper beat the imported fencer home but. for this foul-inp. h. was disqualified, and Ferguson earned a suspension. After the race. Owynn Tompkins said he was to blame for the manner in which Fred-den Rock was ridden. He had told Mergler to avoid the pace and po along with Jolly-Roper. He admitted that, while Merpler followed the instructions in taking the horse back, that it was badly done and had much to do with his defeat. He had expected Rrantome to go out and set a faster pace •when he gave the rider orders. Claptrap, from the I op Cabin Stud Ftable, ■w.-is winner of the best flat offerinp when he led home a smart band in the six and a half furlongs of the Iadkin Handicap. Joseph K. Hais" Storm King raced to second place, with J. A. Harpers All in All beatinp Little Asbestos and Flat Iron, the lifford A. Cochran pair and the only other starters. It was a good start and Tommy XL -Taggart at once rushed Claptrap out into a long lead. Storm King was in second place, but the Other three were close after him and it was In this order the field swung out of the back stretch. Going to the stretch turn Turner shook up Sturm King and he closed some ground, but Mc-Taggart was alert on Claptrap and an eighth out he roused his mount with tin- whip to hold his advantage. In the meantime All in All was outrunning the Cochran pair and she had saved ground on the inner rail. Turner went to a hard drive on Storm King in that last eighth, but it was of no avail and though Claptrap was tiring at the end he was home winner by two lengths Five 1 -ngths i.a.k of Storm King, All in All beat Little AM.estos two lengths. Two-yar-oids of the plater variety met in the opening five-eighths dash and Sturdy Stella, from the Wheatly Stable, proved best whin she had little trouble leading home If. J. Cremens Math. The Sage Stables Broom-oney began quickly on the inside and he forced the early pace. Sturdy Stella rac d down the middle of the track and an eighth out she had Broomoney beaten, to come on and win with something to spare. Werner saved ground with Broomoney all the way and he had no excuses, tiring badly at the end. Sturdy Stella began her racing at the Miami meeting and she has had a thorough seasoning by her racing. Cheap maidens met in the mile of the fifth race, and it fell to Jefferson Livingstons En-dicott in a gamely fought out finish in which he beat Mrs. H. M. Pearsons Tempesto with Kdward Johnsons Rosewood II., the one to be third. Kndicott forced all the running but was never able to come clear of his company. Then at the head of the stretch there was a general closing up and there Rosewood II. lost some ground by going wide and thereafter G. Power was of little help. Tempesto saved ground on the stretch turn and rlotd resolutely under a iong drive. Ritola was an unfortunate in this running. He began from the inside position and m*m badly cut off before the first turn was reached, being shuffled back to last place. Gladstone started rather badly and lost ground on the first turn. He closed some-ground but was never a contender. Sabina racing for A. YV. Kcrvula was winner of the mile and a sixteenth that was the third offering. She was right with all the pace throughout and at the end hung on with excellent courage to beat Donna Video and Frigate was the one to be third. Rady Raplan after showing speed tired t be fourth and Better Times was one that quit badly. Dream of the Valley was aa sluggish as usual leaving the barrier but he remained sluggish until it was all over and was a bad last throughout. Thirteen two-year-old fillies met in the closing four and a half furlongs dash, and it j brought about a rattling finish when H. T. Archibalds Candy May outpamed John A. I Morris Broken Vows with A. C. Bostwicks • Sapin the one to finish third, in this Jim j Sprite broke slow ly and Moira Rhu ran out badly. J
