VINDICATES BACKERS Clyde Van Dusen Accounts for Idle Hour Stakes. ♦ — — Man o War Gelding Wins at Shortest Price of Meeting — Third Consecutive Victory. LEXIXGTOX, Ky.. May 5.— Clyde Van Dusen, the Man o War gelding, maintained his place as monarch over the masculine two-year-old colts and geldings which were available for racing here when lie easily accounted for the renewal of the Idle Hour Stakes that headed todays final program for the Kentucky Associations spring meeting. The victor, ridden by Frank Chiavetta, had the colors of Herbert P. Gardner of New York in front for the entire four and one-half furlongs. He won by five lengths from O. E. Rehms Bobbinalong and the latter had a margin of three lengths over Call Play from the Coldstream Stud. Bowleg the only other starter and provided by the Jay Stable, eliminated himself when he stumbled badly in the first seventy yards. The field was the smallest in the history of the stake and the winners victory is his third straight. The race was worth ,800 and a valuable piece of silver plate, the gift of the management. It was Chiavettas third successive victory during the meeting, he having previously won the Hinata Stakes with Veneita M., and the Ben Ali Handicap with Genial Host. Clyde Van Dusen demonstrated his superiority from the start and, after beginning in front, outran the others by a good margin and without effort throughout, although he succeeded in piling up an advantage of three lengths before reaching the stretch, Chiavetta permitted him to increae it after he had reached the final eighth. On the stretch turn Bobbinalong raced past Call Play on the inside and the latter was steadily distanced thereafter, the finish finding him three lengths back of Bobbinalong. The winner was a pronounced choice and post time found him backed not only to the exclusion of the others, but down to one of the shortest prices of the meeting. Howard Oots provided his initial winner of the meeting when his four-year-old maiden Pouter led home Seminola, Fast Ann and Continued on twentieth page. Garner when he sent the winner througli on the inside of Seminola, Garners mount, on the stretch turn. The winner appeared to suffer slight interference in the last quarter from Seminola, but Fewell kept him going well enough to lead the Rieser filly by a half length at the finish. Evelyn L., from the stable of C. H. Knebel-kamp, furnished a surprise when she sprinted to her maiden victory over nine other maiden two-year-olds in the second race. This race was at four and oi e-half furlongs, with W. Delta* hustling the winner along in front practically all the way. Euonymous followed in closest pursuit of the Kncbelkamp filly most of the distance, and Nomination, also forward from the start, lasted for third place, almost two lengths back of Euonymous, the favorite. Margate, ridden by E. Pool, was the successful one of the third race. She was in front after the first eighth and vigorous driving kept her out of Louis Rubensteins range to win by a neck. Master Sweep, which finished third, was just a half length back of Louis Eubenstein, the finish being one of the most thrilling of the afternoon. A dull performance by Thistle Beauty, under C. Meyer, marked the race. Interference caused by Stormy and Scotland Yard in the first three-sixteenths made somewhat of a mess of the fourth race, the fh-ld for which got away in poor fashion. Scotland Yard carried out several of the others approaching the first turn and they were sufferers again when Stormy bolted soon after starting around the same turn. The latter caught Cassie and Yendeuse and the trio were in a bad jam while Divot and Scotland Yard were speeding along into a long lead. When ready Divot passed Scotland Yard into an easy lead and went on to win by six lengths.
