i ! DAM EAGLE IMPRESSIVELY . R. S. Clarks Derby Hope Works a Mile and an Eighth in 1:54 y5 Over Lexington Track. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 5.— In the most impressive workout of a Kentucky Derby hopeful at the local course this spring Dark Eagle, R. S. Clarks maiden son of Star Hawk — Breathing Spell, covered a mile and an eighth in 1 :5ty5 handily this morning. With his regular exercise boy, Charlie Cofer, in the saddle and carrying about 125 pounds, Dark Eagle was sent on his journey at the mile post after making a leisurely-gallop around the track. Cofer took a good hold of the handsome brown and held him to :24% for the first quarter and :48% for the half. In going over the famed hill. Dark Eagle negotiated the three-quarters in 1 :13%. Clockers and horsemen tabbed him in 1:27% for seven-eighths and 1:40 for the mile. He continued on briskly despite Cofers increased efforts to hold him to a slower pace in 1 :54]s for a mile and an eighth. He came out of the gallop in splendid condition. This trial took precedence among the moves of the many Kentucky Derby candidates which have been trained here this spring. In his last workout Dark Eagle turned the course in 1:4*%, which at that time was the best performance of the spring. Trainer A. Baker was well pleased with Dark Eagles workout and plans to start him for the first time in a race at Churchill Downs. If the colt shows well in his future training and racing, he will carry the colors of the New York sportsman in the Churchill Downs classic. . A ■
