• Q American Derby — Timely Notes and Gossip of Big Race i- — $ Both Dr. Freeland and African will come to Chicago for the American Derby and they may fittingly represent the New York district in that running. African ran a smash-ingly good race in the Belmont Stakes. Dr. Freeland, winner of the Preakness for Walter J. Salmon, had no chance in the Belmont Stakes. He was wearing bar plates and pulled two of them in the running. In the first place, bar plates are a serious handicap in muddy going, and there was every excuse to the colt finishing last when he pulled two of them. John Loftus had about decided to send Chestnut Oak to Chicago for the running, and he may yet be among the invaders. The son of Apprehension is at the top of his form right now and it is doubtful if there is a greater sprinter in training. He will find the mile and a quarter a bit far. Howard F. Gillette, Fames MacVeagh and Mr. and Mrs. Olive Runnells are among those who will give luncheons next Saturday — American Derby Day — at the Washington Park races. Following the French custom, smartly dressed manikins from the various shops will parade about the grounds. This is an outstanding feature at Longchamps during the racing season in Paris. All box seats in the clubhouse for American Derby day have been sold, but there are a few left in the grandstand. Forty mutuel ticket windows have been added to the north end of the park in order to accommodate investors on Derby day. A tallyho — the kind used in the old days on American Derby day — will be seen in the loop district starting tomorrow, advertising the American Derby. A bevy of girls dressed in costumes of the gay 90s will be seated in the picturesque old vehicle. Another approximate odds board has been erected at the north end of the grandstand.
