: J Eastern "Threats" in American Derby — Their Stake Records • e Two prominent eastern colts, which are said to be certain starters in the American Derby at Washington Park Saturday, are Dr. Free-land and African. Both are worthy to be included among the dangerous contestants for the rich prize. A brief review of their stake racing credentials is here presented : AFRICAN. R. T. Wilson. This Olambala colt may be as late coming around to his best form as he is, as a usual thing, in starting a race. At any rate, it appeared in the running of the Belmont Stakes that he had just arrived at that point where he must be considered to be a factor in any distance race he goes in, no matter how good the company. He was second to Blue Lark-si. ur and was beaten less than a length. Being a late starter and a good finisher he is at his best in a route race and even the mile and quarter of the American Derby may be considered a trifle short for him. PRINCIPAL STAKES AS A 2-YEAR-OLD. Baldwin Handicap Won. ,850. Remsen Handicap Third. 00. Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap Unplaced. Walden Handicap Unplaced. PRINCIPAL STAKES AS 3-YEAR-OLD. Rennert Handicap Unplaced. Preakness Stakes Third. ,000. Woodstock Plate Second. ,000. Belmont Stakes Second. ,500. DR. FREELAND. W. J. Salmon. Had Dr. Freeland continued the fine form he displayed early in the Maryland season lie would now be one of the most highly regarded three-year-olds, but his failure in the Withers and Belmont Stakes left him in doubt as a starter in the American Derby. He has been one of the greatest disappointments of those colts that promised freely in their early races. PRINCIPAL STAKES AS 2-YEAR-OLD. Champagne Stakes Unplaced. Eastern Shore Handicap Unplaced. Spalding Lowe Jenkins Handicap Third. ,000. Pimlico Futurity Second. ,000. Grand Union Hotel Stakes Second. ,500. Whirl Stakes Won. ,610. Breeders Futurity Unplaced. Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes Unplaced. PRINCIPAL STAKES AS 3-YEAR-OLD. Chesapeake Stakes Unplaced. Preakness Stakes Won. 2,325. Withers Stakes Unlaced. Belmont Stakes Unplaced. i «
