FRENCH OAKS TO OUTSIDER Ukrania Provides Big Surprise in Winning One of Noted Races of French Turf. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. PARIS, Rranee, June 11. — In a contest marked by much rough riding, a maiden starter won the Prix de Diane the French Oaks at Chantilly Sunday. The surprise winner was the Count de Rivauds Ukrania, a daughter of Ksar and Uganda, ridden by F. Herve. Calandria, owned by E. Martinez de Hoz. finished second under C. H. Semblat. Queskella, which races under the colors of A. Pould, and piloted by D. Chancelier, was third. The winners dam won the Prix de Diane in 1924. Ukrania was bred by the Aga Khan and sold at Deauville as a yearling to the Count de Rivaud for the record price of 1,000,000 francs. She started twice as a two-year-old and was unplaced in very cheap company. Not even the fillys owner expected her to win such a race as the Oaks in her third start. The De Rivaud family had only a modest wager on her. It was reported, however, that Citroen, the automobile magnate, won a tremendous sum. The result was even less expected by the public than it was by her stable. The race was not accepted as a true index of the quality of some of the beaten starters. When a maiden wins the Oaks it is generally unpopular. None of the American sportsmen who race in this country were represented. Ralph Beaver Strassburgers Janistra was especially pointed for the stake, and was conceded a good chance. She was scratched when she stepped on a stone the morning of the race. There were twenty-two starters. The patrol judge reported the American rider, M. McGee, and Herve, for causing a jam on the turn. McGee had the mount on one of Lord Derbys starters. He stated that he was on a beaten filly and tried to get out of a tight place. Herve stated that he found an opening on the rail and came through. O. Hombergs starter, Rollybuchy, with Gordon Richards up, was much troubled throughout the race. Monday, at St. Cloud, Pierre Wertheimers Zambelli, a juvenile by Epinard — My Star, won easily in a field of eighteen starters.
