LATONIA DERBY FIELD ♦ African. Clyde Van Dusen, Windy City Among the Probable Starters in Next Saturdays Big Race % LATONIA, Ky., June 19.— The arrival of R. T. Wilsons three-year-old African here this morning stirred interest in Saturdays renewal of the Latonia Derby. The son of Alambala — Grace Foster came from Washington Park, where he finished third in last Saturdays American Derby and made the short trip without untoward incident. It was understood this afternoon that H. P. Gardners Clyde Van Dusen, winner of the Kentucky Derby and a candidate for the same rich Latonia fixture, will reach here from Washington Park Thursday morning. The Man o War gelding is com- Mug in charge of trainer Van Dusen. Stable quarters were prepared for him today. Another likely starter in Saturdays race was revealed this morning when trainer A. D. Steele sent the Hieatt Brothers good filly Ben Machree over a distance of one mile and a quarter in a private trial. The daughter of Playfellow — Sweet Briar showed to advantage when she traversed the long course in 2:10%, easily; quarter in :25%, half in :3l%, six furlongs in 1.18%, and mile in 1 :43%. R, S. Clarks Plumbago worked a mile In 1:40%, easily. This colt, however, has not as yet left the ranks of doubtful starters fcr the race. Besides the aforementioned, the likely starters for the race include the Audley Farms The Choctaw, Desha Breckinridges Lord Braedalbane, F. M. Grabners Windy City, winner of the American Derby ; H. P. Headleys Paraphrase and Amsterdam, Park View Stables Jem and possibly one or two others. The Latonia Derby carries 5,000 in added money, as well as a valuable and handsome trophy and an additional ,000 if Clyde Van Dusen, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, succeeds in scoring Saturday. The interest in the stake, which is coming up for its forty-seventh running, is reflected in the big demand for reservations for the day. Today found the supply of boxes close to exhaustion and reserved seats in the grandstand continue in good demand.
