PROMISE OF GREAT RACE • Illinois Oaks Expected to Provide Contest Out of the Ordinary. ♦ Rose of Sharon, Extraordinary Filly, Highly Praised — Snnde May Ride if One of His Entries Start. » The Illinois Oaks, Saturdays outstanding attraction at Washington Park, is, in a measure, a fillies Derby. It presents promise of being the greatest struggle this year between three-year-olds of the filly division. Radiance is reflected by several of the probable contenders, and a premier rider in particular. If present plans develop to his satisfaction. Earl Sande will wear silks on either Nearby or Safety Pin, his eligibles in the Oaks. Sande has been galloping these daughters of Friar Rock with the expectation of sending one or the other to the post. Track conditions have served to retard Nearby. She will not extend herself unless the course is fast. Safety Pin is not wholly averse to a slow course, but Nearby, in the opinion of Sande, is closer to a race than Safety Pin. Sandes knowledge of the ability of a racer to meet a demand is as great as his saddle skill. He said, after having studied all of the probable starters in the Illinois Oaks, his conviction had deepened regarding the superlative class of the contestants. "Consider Rose of Sharon," observed Sande. "An extraordinary filly, indeed, as indicated by her victory in the Ashland and Kentucky Oaks. Even greater was her victory in the Ridgeway Club Purse at Latonia. Carrying 118 pounds, conceding weight to Current, Ben Machree, Nettie Lyons and Vesta, all formidable, he raced through heavy going, recording 1 :49. A length and a half distant was Current. Three lengths back of Current was Ben Machree. "W. Crump, riding Rose of Sharon, evidently was in command throughout. When ready and while approaching the final furlong. Rose of Sharon responded. She is unquestionably the most promising filly in recent years, as shown by performance, but the situation Saturday will be different in many respects. "I am confident the Illinois Oaks will be sensational if the going is satisfactory. Rose of Sharon, despite her speed and class, may encounter a surprise. I do not hesitate to say this race will be even more spectacular than the American Derby. It deserves a crowd as great as that which witnessed the Derby last Saturday." Sande said Washington Park course, when right, is one of the best. He is one of the busiest trainers here, getting his racers ready. Pea body Memorial Handicap, at a mile and a ejamrttr, down for decision Saturday, June 29, at Washington Park. Like the Illinois Oaks, it is a feature carrying added money amount to 0,000. Mr. Suyvtsant Peabody will r.resent the owner of the winner a handsome trophy. He is the son of Francis S. Peabody. It is probable the Illinois Oaks field will include, in addition to Rose of Sharon, those sparkling performers Current, I-ndy Broadcast, Frances Milward, Mint Friary, Willa, Nancy Seth, Altitude, Lillian T., Golden Ansf-r and others. Willa, belonging to Jesse Spencer, is a dangerous proposition, according to many horsemen. Colonel Winn and C. W. Hay, general manager, are anticipating a great attendance Saturday. They are united in the belief that the Oaks will be one of the finest races of the Washington Park meeting. The field will probably come from the follow ing : Altit;:.!.- Lillian T.
