WINSLOWS NARROW MARGIN Overwhelming Favorite Almost Beaten in Main Race. Inability of Diminutive Paul 2feal to Keep Gelding Prom Itoring In Tactics Nearly Kesults in Defeat. LEXINGTON", Ky., April 22. Winslow. a son of Light Brigade and Miss Nell, which J. N. Camden nominated for the .Kentucky-Derby and other important stakes for three-year-olds, this afternoon had a close call from defeat when, after being installed an over- whelming favorite for the Bed Burley Purse, a dash which topped the offering at the Kentucky Association track, he only succeeded in getting home a head in front of W. S. Dudleys Miss Bess. Stop Gap, the first starter of the meeting from Otto W. Lehmanns stable, was third, finishing the Futurity course two lengths back of Miss Bess and three lengths in the van of the Serenata Farms Wood Axton. The victor, credited with a number of fast trials during his preparation for racing over the Churchill Downs track, proved himself the rankest kind of a "rail runner" and this, combined with the inability of the diminutive Paul Neal to bring the gelding under his control, probably prevented him from being returned an easy winner. His roguish tactics kept Neal busy at every stage and after reaching the closing eighth well in advance of his company he all but lost honors to Miss Bess when he stubbornly persisted In lunging to the inner rail. The trouble Neal experienced in keeping the gelding going well enough to save the race only slightly exceeded that the youngster encountered in driving his mound around Stop Gay and Bobby Duncan to the lead when entering the stretch. Before Neal succeeded in getting him to the outside of the leaders he had persisted in finding his course close to the inside, but once he left the rail Neal rushed him to the front almost before he had opportunity to swerve and that good judgment saved the day for the gelding and his large following. Only a short time after Winslow forged to the front, Miss Bess worked her way around Stop Gay and Bobby Duncan and. closing gamely through the linal three-sixteenths and favored by the victors unruliness, stole within a head of him and might have reached Continued on twenty-fourth pose. f 1 1 i j 1 : : . i s i ! Racketeer, among the others, came in for no little support, but failed badly and was far out of it after the opening half mile. The Bed Burley Purse topped the most ordinary offering of the meeting, yet much interesting sport resulted arid those of the fairly large crowd that visited the grounds despite cool weather, found their judgment sustained in an average number of instances. Airs. Foster contributed an outstanding surprise when she registered decisively over Sporting Lady, Shasta Lad and five others of the better grade platers in the fifth race, the third contested over the Futurity course. She took up the lead at once and maintaining a fast pace was always in command and home four lengths in front of Sporting Lady, which headed Shasta Lad right at the end. The veteran Scotland, making his first start under the colors of John V. Pons, and the staunchest kind of a choice, proved worthy of his big following when he easily accounted for the opening sprint. Running the Futurity Course in 1:10, the fastest time of, the meeting, he won easily and by more than a length from Joan K., with Marys Toy third. Jockey Dent Smith had the winner well in command after reaching the turn and, maintaining his speed, he was not seriously menaced by Joan K. during the run through the stretch. A matter of inches gave third to Marys Toy over Gotoit, second, choice. One of the closest finishes of the afternoon resulted in the second race, a claiming affair for maiden juvenile fillies, when Mexican D., Tan Face and Miss Chilla raced to the end of the four and one-half furlongs in tight formation in the order as named. The winner, a daughter of Tracer and Dee D., carrying the colors of J. Carrick, had a tough time with J. Spencers Tan Face during a major part of the stretch, and while she lost the lead for a brief time, succeeded in regaining it in time to win by a neck. Miss Chilla, which was installed favorite, closed almost five lengths on the winner, and Tan Face during the final eighth and finished so strongly that she probably could have overhauled them in a few more strides. Bogan scored his third win during the meeting and added another second to Monti-cellos long string of such when he just man-aged to outstay the latter and Lady Clar-j ence, to get away with honors in the one mile and a sixteentli third race. - Monticello. a head back, led Lady Clarence, which finished fastest of the trio, .by a nose. Frank Chiavetta, after taking the victor across abruptly during the opening eighth, indulged him with the pacemaking under hustling tactics and rode a particularly strong finish to keep the gelding going well enough to retain the lead in the furious final drive. Both Monti-cello and. Lady Clarence closed ground gradually after reaching the stretch and were right after the resolutely finishing winner all during the closing seventy yards. .
