BOULEVARD HANDICAP To Clearance by Narrow Margin After Mishap to Wu. Brown Representative, Apparently-Best, Almost Knocked Down at Start, Finishes Second. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 2. The feature offering at Jamaica was the Boulevard Handicap, at one mile and a sixteenth distance and it attracted another big crowd. This handicap was fashioned for horses that had performed in claiming races and for that reason the quality was not much. Then the race was ruined when Clearance, the winner and racing for R. J. Moore, was off running, while Frank E. Browns Wu, beaten only a neck, was put "on the fence" right after the start and it was plainly evident that he was best of the company. Third fell to Sun Forward, racing for Mrs. J. P. Smith. There was considerable delay at the start, for which Clearance was solely responsible. Then he was permitted to wheel at the barrier as it was released and he left in full stride with the other starters in close quarters on the inside and when Please bore over Kelsay was obliged to take up sharply to prevent going down. With this advantage at the start, Clearance was able to dominate all the running, while Wu was so effectiely knocked out of it that he was racing last of the five. Please and Sun Forward were close after Clearence, with the three-year-old Flaming following them and leading the Brown colt. WU 0 OUTSIDE. There was little change in these positions in the run through the back stretch, but on the far turn Kelsay had taken Wuto the outside of the leaders and he was circling around gallantly, while at the same time Flaming made his challenge and Sun Forward was racing next to the inside rail and going strongly. Wu was forced to cover considerable ground rounding the stretch turn, by reason of being on the outside, while Clearance had saved ground next to the rail. The three-year-old closed with a degree of courage, but it had cost him too much effort to make up the ground lost at the start and Clearance was safely home winner by a neck. Wu had beaten Sun Forward by two lengths and Flaming was another half length away. Westerner, from the Dorwood Stable, after various failures, escaped from the maiden class in the opening five furlongs race for maiden juveniles. Jimmy Jingle, racing for John Speed Elliott, was the one to race to second place, and third was the portion of Brandon Dare, from the Brandon Stable. The son of Westy Hogan left the post fast and when he opened up a good lead there remained little to the race and he increased his lead at every post, to win easily. Brandon Dare was the one to race second most of the distance, but Jimmy Jingle, after overcoming much interference, finished fast to take second place. MORDIXES GAME RACE. Prank E. Brown, whose horses have been doing well, took down another purse when his Mordine was winner of the second race, in which he was forced to take up top weight of 121 pounds. At the end he was doing his best to lead home Black Mammy, from the Ramapo Stable, and W. R. Coes Keep On readily saved third from J. H. Louchheims Infinitus, a recent winner. The start was a good one, but while Mordine at once went out to set the pace, Infinitus was slow to be under way and was last. Keep On raced after the son of Morvich, but she was a length and a half back of him, with Quickstep and Sir Johren following closely. In addition to beginning slowly, Infinitus had been bumped before he was under way and that added to his handicap. Kelsay went right along with Mordine and he increased his lead to three lengths. Keep On was hanging to second place resolutely and Quickstep was soon doing his best to keep in contention. Black Mammy was moving up steadily on the outside, while Ellis was driving Infinitus in a desperate attempt to regain the ground lost at the start. This was the order heading to the stretch turn, but a furlong out Mordine was still well clear. By that time Black Mammy Avas lapped on Keep On and racing better than the others. She disposed of the Coe filly with little trouble and with every stride was catching Mordine, but Kelsay managed to nurse the brown sprinter home to save the day by a head. Keep Orf was three lengths back of Black Mammy, but a length and a half before the unfortunate Infinitus.
