ROMP FOR SWEEP ALL « Dixiana Racer Makes Auspicious Chicago Debut at Homewood. ♦ Defeats Nostaw by Five Lengths in Olympia Fields Handicap — Gold Step Furnishes Surprise. ♦ HOMEWOOD, 111.. May 26.— Sweep All. runner-up to Twenty Grand in the Kentucky Derby, made his first start since that race when he went postward in the Olympia Fields Handicap, outstanding race at Washington Park this afternoon. He was the easiest sort of a winner over a small band in that event, finishing five lengths before Nostaw, while Maya finished in third place. Bargello, the early favorite, could do no better than finish fourth in a field that embraced but a quartet of starters. There was little doubt of Sweep Alls superiority. Off well, he permitted Maya to set the pace for a quarter, then took the lead, and, drawing away when Maya tired, won with jockey Herman Schutte looking back during the final sixteenth. Nostaw, finishing on the outside in the stretch, wore down Maya in the last furlong. Bargello, with 118 pounds up, was at no time a threat. Sweep All carried 102 pounds, and ran the mile in 1:38% with the three-quarters in 1:1114. He was favorite when the betting closed. TRACK AT BEST. Because of the improved weather the crowd on hand was on a par with that of opening day, and the track was at its best. Speculation was brisk in the mutuel department during the afternoon. The Olympia Fields Handicap had a ,500 purse, of which the winners share was ,100. The Everglade Stable furnished the first winner when Dyak, son of Dodge and Quality, experienced no real difficulty defeating the speedy Band Time, a newcomer to colors from the Dixiana Stable, Gold Tip and nine other maiden juvenile colts and geldings. The youngsters tried conclusions over the five furlongs and. while Band Time raced away into a long lead at the turn, Dyak followed in second place and overwhelmed the Dixiana colt with keen speed during the stretch run. After heading Band Time, the victor drew out and the finish found him nicely in hand, four lengths in front of the early leader. Gold Tip led the others after going three-eighths and accounted for third place by three lengths over Tom Mar. Twelve of the second flight three-year-olds started over three-quarters in the second race and in the interesting contest that resulted E. R. Bradleys Burgoo, ridden by James Smith, proved best. Joey Bibb raced to second place and Overlay was third. Taking no small chance while keeping the winner in a forward position on the inside during the first half mile. Smith hustled him between Overlay and Gettin Even, the leaders, near the final eighth and. drawing clear, withstood the belated rush of Joey Bibb, which began slowly and raced wide for the entire distance. Flying, a maiden racer which had hereto- fore shown but little, surprised when she led for practically the entire distance in the third race. She lasted to finish a neck before Anita Ormont, and paid 16.18, the longest price of the meeting. Anita Ormont saved ground in the stretch, to be second, and Zina got up in time to nose out Precious Ann for third. Pirogue was installed fa- vorite, but after showing some speed on the outside in the early stages, quit badly in the final eighth. Flying was ridden by jockey J. Smith, who piloted the previous : winner, Burgoo. Gold Step, one of the stars of the Exposition Park meeting, carried his speed to the I Homewood course and won from a good band of sprinters in the Western Avenue l Purse, a six furlongs dash, which was sched-. uled as the fourth race. Close up from the ; start, he headed the others when Tomber-L . eau tired in the stretch, and held on to i score a rather lucky victory. Chimney - Sweep was best, but finished second, and t Tombereau was third. Chimney Sweep finished fastest of all after being pocketed in I the stretch and was gaining rapidly at the end. No More, which was well backed, got off slowly, and, poorly ridden, tired after • reaching a prominent position on the stretch , turn. Gold Step was an outsider and paid I 1.12. He ran the distance in 1:12%. «.
