FAVORITES IN ASCENDENCY L * Public Choices Reward Their Back- L ers at Torontos Popular Track. ♦ French Lass Registers in Mild Drive to l Score in Strathcona Plate, Most Pretentious Offering of Featureless Card. » TORONTO, Ont., May 26.— Favorites figured prominently during the running of a c; featureless program, furnished for the third J day of the meeting at the Woodbine course a of the Ontario Jockey Club. For the first n time during the current meeting the card o •was without a stake attraction, and the s nearest approach to a feature was the fifth g race, styled the Stratchona Plate. French Lass, from the H. C. Hatch Stable, showed a a return to winning form when she galloped ti along in command of her formidable rivals F5 to register in a mild drive. Khorasan, the T mainstay of the Seagram Stable after the ■withdrawal of Sun Craig, landed second, e while Timon finished third after a strenuous ? duel with Footmark and Donny Johnny. French Lass, by her clever score in the j Stratchcona, brought the list of winning , favorites to four in the first five races. . Dark Mission began the success of choices • in the initial offering, while My Care and Ancoda, winners of their respective engage- • ments added to the formfulness of the day. s Racing was conducted under clear skies, f and it was a rather large week-day gather- ■ ing that turned out to enjoy the entertain- ■ ment that was furnished. ■ To make her score possible French Lass began with her usual swiftness and, al- f though the others were away in good align- " ment, she was able to race into a brief t lead. Footmark was right at her heels for z a the first furlong. Timon was just able to j hold command, while Khorasan was the j a slowest of the seven to find his racing legs, but at the turn he had moved to within a length of the victress. G. Riley had, however, kept something in reserve with the i Hatch sprinter and in a mild drive held the 1 field safe. Simon was third. j The W. S. Kilmer stable furnished another ] juvenile winner when Dark Mission grad- a uated in the Don Caster Plate, at five fur- 1 longs, which began the sport for the t afternoon. This saw five others offering the contention, and second place was the portion for W. J. Nortons Carus Clarus, i with Lady Norris landing third for H. G. 1 Bedwell and J. W. Garths Runfire before the two others. i Dark Mission was installed a top-heavy 1 choice, and he lived up to his high rating when he moved into the lead soon after the I start. Dominating the running thereafter. 1 C. Phillips had him home the winner by a i length, while Carus Clarus held a like mar- ; gin over Lady Norris for second h;»nors. My Care, racing for J. P. McGovern, made a successful invasion of Canada when he i accounted for the two miles of the Hopeful i Steeplechase, which was run as the second race. Installed a top-heavy choice, the Mc- 1 Govern racer, after taking command at the ; eighth jump, never relinquished his lead i thereafter, to score by two and one-half lengths. Totalisator, the closest pursuer of the winner throughout, landed second for the J. P. White stable, and Vestip was an easy third. There were eight others to contest, and three of them fell. John Sobieski went down at the fourteenth jump, but was remounted and finished the course. Forrester fell at the same obstacle, while Gold Trap refused the barrier at the sixth. Juveniles sported silks for the four and one-half furlongs, dash which was listed third and styled the Grosvenor Plate. This race furnished Howee, from the Ira Wilson stable, an opportunity to earn his second consecutive purse at this meeting when he sped along in advance of his six rivals throughout the dash, to score in rather easy fashion. W. S. Kilmers Suntica pursued the winner to the finish. C. V. Whitneys Mar-lene easily led home Malley Marcus from the Elmtree Stable, and the three others Howee, particularly alert at the start moved away into a three lengths lead in the opening furlong, and thereafter his rider E. Fator, was content to rate the Wilson [ juvenile along under a snug restraint, to , have him victorious by a two lengths margin. . Suntica, ridden hard throughout was I unable to cut down the winners advantage , anfuS5Ve1 the second Prize by a length, with Marlene three lengths before Malley ! |
