- VETO OF FLORIDA MEASURE Joseph E. Widener Surprised Over Action of Governor — Hialeah Work Halted. NEW YORK, N. Y., May 30.— Joseph E. Widener, who more than any other one man was responsible for the passage of the Florida race bill, was greatly surprised at the action of Governor Carlton in vetoing the measure. He said that he had talked with the governor frequently, and that he had not shown any intention of opposing the measure. He felt secure that the bill would have been passed and had arranged that Frank J. Bruen would go to Miami and lay plans for the expenditure of some 00,-000 in the various improvements that had been decided upon for the Hialeah course. Mr. Widener said that of course the vetoing of the bill would at once halt all the plans for the beautifying and enlarging of the Hialeah course. He was not prepared to say whether or not it would mean his withdrawal from racing in Florida, but he expressed great surprise and regret at the fate of the bill after it had passed both houses of the legislature by such convincing majorities.
