N. Y., June 5.— Sun Meadow. Mrs. K. E. Hitts good three-year-old son of Sun Briar and Clover, was an easy win- ner of the Ballot Handicap, the best offering of an interesting card at Belmont Park to- day. Only three went to the post, and it was John R. Thompson, Jr.s Minotaur that raced to second place, with Mountain Elk, from the Barry Vail Stable, a bad last of the three that started. This race was in decided contrast to the effort of the son of Sun Briar in the Withers Stakes, and an evidence that the colt has returned to the form that was his before taking sick shortly before the running of the Preakness, for which he was being pointed. There was a big off-day crowd out for the sport, and the weather and track con- ditions were excellent. There was little to the Ballot Handicap, which was an over-e night affair. Schaefer sent Sun Meadow into the lead at the rise of the barrier, and there was no stage of the race that his mount was fully extended. At the end he was under restraint four lengths before Mintaur, while Mountain Elk ran a surprisingly dull race and was never able to keep stride with the other two. This son of Apprehension and Bantry had shown better speed in his trials, but will have to begin all over again if he is to be rated among the good three- year-olds. Fourteen two-year-olds started in the opening race of the day. which was under high grade claiming conditions and over four and one-half furlongs through the Widener course. Contribute, racing for the Rancocas Stable and ridden by C. Kurt- singer, proved best in a drive and showed the way to Mrs. John Hertz Well Heeled, while Benjamin Blocks Morden was third, The winner was a receding factor in the calculations and. when the start came, raced forwardly throughout but under restraint back of the pace set by Morden, Dove and Altmark. In the final eighth Kurtsinger moved up with his mount, disposed of the leaders and Continued on twenty-first page. ■ 1 : ! : • ■ ! • ■ I • l i l • • • i , , , i 1 I I • » I , 1 I I EASY FOR SUN MEADOW | Continued from first page. drew away. Well Heeled, which dropped back in the early stages, responded when i called upon and finished fast to wear down I Morden for second place. The second race was over one mile for ■ platers and it saw I. Perlsteins Royal Tree . the winner over E. F. Sanfords Lindy. , with Westko, from the Kilrane Stable, # close third. Thirteen started and Burke at once took the lead with Royal Tree, and the son of r Snob II. had speed enough to hold command throughout. Lindy worked his way up on the inside and made a determined challenge i in the final eighth, but tired in the final strides and Royal Tree was the winner by half a length. Westko also gained fast and saved ground in the stretch to reach third place, another • half a length back and three lengths before i Jimmy Jingle, which had always been in . the first fligh*. Croyden, after racing close i up, was forced to go wide on the stretch turn and tired at the end. There was another big field in the third, a dash of six furlongs through the Widener ■ Course, for three-year-old maidens. Audley Farm Stables Rocky News was an easy winner over E. R. Bradleys Blue Ship, with i Marshall Fields Martinelli saving third from Barometer, a stablemate of Blue Ship, Greens cut out the running, but she tired badly in the final furlong, while Rocky News, steadily making up ground on the i inside, drew out with little effort to be the • winner by five lengths. Blue Ship proved I best of the others, but at the end she was i doing her best to save second place by a . head from the fast closing Martinelli. , Barometer, as usual, was a bit sluggish in the early racing, but closed some ground. On the way to the post Eddie Barnes was ; unseated from Five OClock when the bridle : on his mount broke, and there was some ! delay before he remounted and continued to the post. The fifth was a four and a half furlongs i dash, for juvenile fillies, and it brought an i E. R. Bradley score when Boiling Water, a . well named daughter of Bubbling Over, un-1 der a masterly ride by Laverne Fator, scored 1 over Marciana, from the Log Cabin Stud Stable, with the Audley Farm Stables ; French Honey beating George D. Wideners Straightlace for third. Fator forced most of the pace with the winner and Marciana finished fast, while Straightlace was badly pocketed and did not race to expectations. W. R. Coes Masked Ball was dropped down when entered among the cheap ones ; which raced in the mile contest at the end I of the card, and she forced all the pace to be winner over Mrs. Olive Curtis Recede. ,
