f CONNAUGHT PARK NOTES i s OTTAWA, Ont., June 5. Judge Charles Primrose was an arrival from New York and will remain for a few days of the sport at Connaught Park. Following his brief stay, he will journey to Salem. Mass., to look over the track at that point. Joe Kahn directed the shipment of five horses that arrived in splendid condition at Connaught Park. The shipment came from Jamaica, L. I. The W. E. Martin racers were unloaded without mishap after an uneventful trip from Belmont Park. Jockey Frank Taylor accompanied the W. E. Martin racers and will do the riding for the establishment. J. J. Farrell, custodian of the jockeys quartern, issued a total of forty badges to riders that are here to ride during the meeting. Others are expected to join the riding brigade steadily during the progress of the meeting. For the convenience of those speculatively inclined, a special three-way mutuel machine with an investment of a dollar each way was installed in the main pavilion. This innovation immediately proved popular. Hal Booker, with a band of seven, augmented the New York shipments when his band was put into quarters at Connaught Park. E. M. Doumani has secured first call for the Connaught Park meeting on jocky R. Coopr. who was astride three winners on opening day. Nigera. which raced for J. F. Hynes in the final race Wednesday, came out of the contest with a badly bruised leg, the result of a severe kick she received at the barrier. Secretary T. P. Gorman announced that Wednesdays turnout at Connaught Park was the largest opening day gathering in several years and that the mutuel handle for the seven races was far beyond expectations. His excellency, Lord Bessborough, governor geneal of Canada, notified the directors of Connaught Park that he would drive to the course in state Saturday. Preparations for a large gathering are being rushed. Kentucky Colonel, of the H. G. Wilkins Stable, got away from his exercise boy and ran away three miles Thursday before he could be caught. He was consequently withdrawn from the fifth race. E. J. Salt, trainer of the Seagram Stable racers here, has Earthen Jar steadily recovering from an attack of car fever that was contracted en route to Connaught Park. Harry Giddings, who shipped his entire band of racers in his care to the Blue Bonnets course of the Montreal Jockey Club, reloaded three members of the outfit and they arrived at Connaught Park without mishap. J. J. Burns, well known Toronto sportsman, and owner of a large string of racers that are being campaigned on Canadian tracks, was an arrival to take in the remainder of the meeting at Connaught Park. At present there are twenty-two racers on the preferred list to have preference at six furlongs and under, while there are ten preferred at a mile and over. «
