He opened up an early lead which he held to the end. Battle Sweep was always in closest pursuit of the leader, finishing far in advance of the others. Night Tears raced in third place throughout, unmolested, as Halliard, the remaining starter, dwelt when the start came and was practically left. Rain last night rendered the track heavy this morning, causing much scratching, and the feature race suffered most in this re- spect. The footing dried out rapidly as the afternoon progressed under a bright sun, but a cool breeze swept the course. It was Ladies Day, and the largest crowd of the week witnessed the racing, which was fea-; tured by many thrilling stretch struggles. Bright Comet led the way with Helen Dean following until midway of the stretch in the sixth race. During the final furlong there was a general closing up among the rear horses, Purlie, Domina and Flo ONeill, Helen Dean tired in the final seventy yards, and the other quartet reached the wire almost in perfect alignment. When the offi-i cial placing was displayed Bright Comet was awarded the decision over Purlie. with Domina third, a head in advance of Flo ONeill. Purlie finished the fastest. Mrs. Foster scored her initial success of the meeting when she won the opening race in a stirring stretch struggle by a narrow margin. Red Grange and Copper raced closely lapped contesting for the leadership to the stretch, where Airs. Foster and Cal-; wick challenged. Copper held on best of the others and forced Mrs. Foster to her best effort at the end. Calwick barely saved third from Thrace, which closed a big gap1 after causing a tedious post delay due to his erratic behavior. Although last to leave the barrier. Cabama was the winner of the second race. Finishing with a brilliant rush on the outside in the stretch, he overhauled Baboo in the last few strides. Never far from the leaders, Baboo got to the front a sixteenth out and held on well during the final drive. It was only by the shortest of margins that Your Flag secured third from Rare Charm after having saved much ground entering the stretch. Alamae, the early leader, tired badly, It was only in the final stride of the third dash that Thundertone snatched victory from Nell Kuhlman by the shortest of mar- gins after closing with a brilliant rush through the final sixteenth. Nell Kuhlman wrested the lead from Grand Acre and Mary Bane when straightened out in the stretch, and appeared an easy winner until the last hundred yards. Grand Acre was taken to the outside in the last furlong in search of the best going, and this enabled Mary Bane to slip up on the inside of him to secure the minor award. Another rousing finish came with the run- ning of the fourth race, in which Ear Full and Burnam raced closely lapped all through the stretch, with Burnam on the outside. Ear Full set the pace, but a furlong out Burnam secured a slight advantage when put to a drive. Under a confident looking ride by the apprentice J. OHara, Ear Full proved the gamer during the final test and scored by a head. Crowned Head was al-i ways in third place, which he maintained to the end. * — i
