; I CONNAUGHTS BIGGEST CROWD i Ladies Day Purse Outstanding Contest on Program — Kalani Outstays Fair Lad in Drive. OTTAWA, Ont., June 5.— The Ladies Day Purse, decided under claiming conditions, was the most important race staged at Con-naught Park today before the biggest gathering of the meeting at the Aylmer plant. Kalani, sporting the silks of A. Lamoreux, was the winner of the race. The Lamoreux platers triumph came in one of the closest finishes of the day. In a bitter stretch duel the five-year-old lasted to get a nose decision at the end of the one mile and seventy yards, over W. T. Trenholmes improved Fair Lad. W. D. Bucks Rock Crusher raced into third place before the eight others. Kalani raced close behind Fair Lad and Skirt from the outset, moved up to the ! pair in determined fashion when moving out of the back stretch, and, displacing his rivals a furlong from home, was able to i hang on long enough to earn the purse. Fair Lad retained a three-length margin for second, while Rock Crusher, coming from well back in the second division, was a driving third. With the fair sex the guests of the management, • attendance figures leaped to its highest peak for the present meeting. Ideal weather conditions prevailed following the i disappearance of overcast skies, and it was i a banner day of racing that found outsiders : in the majority. Jockey L. Laurin lost the services of his i apprentice allowance following his score I on Red Tarn, in the sixth race Thursday, , at Connaught Park. It was the youngsters fifteenth victory. W. E. Martin, who has a small band of ! racers at Connaught Park, while his main i division is at Belmont Park, pulled out for New York. He was accompanied by Charles i Primrose, who did missionary work here : for the Montreal meetings, and Bill Worley, , owner of the good colt Galapan. Fred Kahn, , son of Joe Kahn, also was included in the i party. All three will return for the meeting at Blue Bonnets. Jockey L. Wells reported to J. J. Farrell, , custodian of the jockeys quarters, and made ! his saddle debut astride Contractor in the I last race for E. M. Doumain.
