MOKATAM WINS SUBURBAN Outstays Questionnaire by a Neck in Famous New York Fixture — Gallant Knight Bolts at Start — Robertsons Ride Big Factor in Victory. « NEW YORK, N. Y., June 6. — In one of the most thrilling races in its long and glorious history, Harry F. Sinclairs Mokatam was winner of the Suburban Handicap, adding 1,200 to his earnings. James Butlers Questionnaire, the top weight and popular choice 1 with an immense crowd, was a close second and two lengths back of these, as they fought it out, came Ral Parrs good filly Her Grace. There was a touch of tragedy when 1 the Audley Farm Stables Gallant Knight, which was brought on from Chicago for the ; *-kr«r»r»/» Vfc*~»1i- ij-l bolted at of t the V» a start t«4-r»**i- and rims -wwrrt a nlitviilnta/] eliminated. *-kr«r»r»/» Vfc*~»1i- ij-l bolted at of t the V» a start t«4-r»**i- and rims -wwrrt a nlitviilnta/] eliminated. grace, was . The race was run in 2:022i and the finish 1 saw two of the C. V. Whitney jockeys battling - it out for Robertson had the mount on 1 Mokatam, while "Sonny" Workman rode ! Questionnaire. With delightful weather and a card that t abounded in excellent races, the crowd was 3 an immense one. Then there was a fashion i parade during the day. but small attention i was paid this added attraction, so thrillingly r close were the finishes of the races. There was a short delay at the post for . the Suburban Handicap, and the horses all I moved from the stalls together, but Gallant : Knight, as he took one stride, propped and I bolted to the outside. This was virtually r being left, and he galloped along far back . of the other four that started. Polydorus ! set the pace, and Her Grace was chasing , after the three-year-old with Mokatam and [ Questionnaire following well within striking , distance. That was the order on the back stretch, and it was when turning out of the back ; stretch that Robertson made his move that was to bring victory. He shook up Moka-1 tam and. going to the outside, was soon in front and clear of the others. As he made that move Workman found himself pocketed j , with Questionnaire, and the Butler colt did not have racing room. Polydorus was through when Mokatam l came alongside and McAtee continued to 1 rate Her Grace along, saving ground on I the inside. She was surely wearing the ■ three-year-old down, but in the meantime i Workman had moved up with Questionnaire, and he was gaining on Mokatam gallantly, . but Robertson had saved something for that charge and when he called on the son of Bud Lerner he responded magnificently. On they came under furious drives, but Mokatam would not give one inch, and as : he swept past the line he still was a neck to the good. Questionnaire had done his part nobly, and he raced straight and true, but it was apparent the move of Robertson leaving the back stretch had decided the race. It was there he obtained the jump on the son of Sting, and his mount was good enough to , make it count tremendously. Her Grace had no trouble saving third from Polydorus, but she was ten lengths back of the first two. Louchheim silks, which have been particularly successful this season, scored another victory in the five furlongs dash for maiden juveniles that was the opening race when Economic was an easy winner, with Makalu, from the Fair Stable, racing to second place, and C. V. Whitneys The Bull saving third from J. B. Belks Sir Walter. The Good and Plenty Steeplechase Handicap, over the short course, brought a rare thrill and the talented G. H. "Pete" Bost-wick never showed greater skill than when he brought Mrs. K. E. Hitts Icicle home the winner in the final strides over Mrs. T. W. Durants Brown Ruler. It was purley his superior riding that made the victory possible, for he was on the second best horse, but turned defeat into victory by his masterly riding. Well back of the first two, the Greentree Stables Valorous was third, with John P. McGoverns My Care fourth and Cobbs and Bagatelle, the only other starters, beaten off. There was another stirring finish in the Star Jasmine Purse, a race for fillies and mares that fell to Joseph E. Wideners Buckup. At the end she was doing her best to lead C. V. Whitneys Avenger past the line, with Chicsu, from the Ramapo Stable, third, while Harlem, Chalice, Double Time and Adine, the other starters, were soundly beaten. Double Time and Harlem were the ones to set the pace from a good start, while Garner rated Buckup along back of them and Adine raced alongside the Widener filly. Avenger, as usual, was a bit slow to find her racing legs. It was not until the stretch turn was reached that Garner made his move with Buckup and he elected to go outside the leaders. He had the daughter of Buchan showing the way when the stretch was reached. Garner was hard at work on Buckup as Avenger wore down Chicsu and the Whitney filly continued to gain as Buckup swept past the line the winner by half a length.
