STAKE ELIGIBLES WORK OUT 1 » Latonia Track at Its Best Despite S Unsettled Weather Conditions. ♦ Management Facing Difficult Task in Taking Care of All Who Have Asked for Stable Boom. fi 1 a J LATONIA, Ky., June 6— Despite the heavy thunderstorm in Cincinnati, the La- s tonia track was at its best, and the large J number of horses quartered here awaiting tl T the opening of the thirty-one day meeting as Saturday, June 27, went through their trials over a lightning fast course. S Many candidates for the six stakes, chief t of which is the forty-eighth renewal of the h Latonia Derby, were on the track, and they g came in for the most attention. The question now facing the management f is where to quarter the horses that will be e here. It has reached such a stage that Mau- c rice Galvin, vice president of the club, made s a hurried trip to Chicago to confer with Col. Matt Winn regarding the building of c several new barns. During the last several r days track superintendent Charles Nolte has c received applications from some of the leading stables of the country. He does not s handle the allotment of stalls. There is a v committee appointed by the American Turf p Association for that purpose. a a Horsemen that in the past ten years raced i is elsewhere as well as those that remained c in Chicago last summer, intend shipping to Latonia in the event they can find accom- modations. Jack Howard, who went to Ar- c lington Park from Washington Park and v only visited Latonia for the 1930 stakes, I has notified Nolte that he will be here with g twenty head; the Keeneland Stud, Theo. E. c Muellers Shady Brook Farm Stable and a others of equal note have reserved stalls, and it appears that workmen will be erect- 1 ing buildings on the spacious grounds in t the near future. C. W. Hay, general manager of Washington Park, sent word that there were 1,600 i horses at Chicago that would be at Latonia ] if stalls were available. t "Now you know what I am up against," a was Noltes comment after reading the mes- 1 sage. There are 590 nominations for the six stakes, and a survey of the list of eligibles r. reveals that each fixture should bring out J a large and brilliant field. The Cincinnati ] Trophy closed with the greatest number of nominations, 154 being eligible for the six ] furlongs race, while the Clipsetta Stakes, 1 another two-year-old event, has 126 eligible ] to start. " ■• I The Independence, Oaks and Enquirer, have less than one hundred, while the La- ] tonia Derby drew 104. ] With a large number of the stake candi- i dates in training, it means that stall room must be provided for them, and the attrac- I tiveness of the first condition book is an- J other reason for many horsemen asking for accommodations. « r
