SUN HATTER A SURPRISE * Defeats Marine in Windsor Hotel Handicap at Blue Bonnets. « Immense Gathering Present for Final Days Sport of Spring Meeting of Montreal Jockey Club. ■ MONTREAL, Que., June 20.— A surprise came with the running of the Windsor Hotel Handicap at Blue Bonnets this afternoon when Sun Hatter came from behind in the stretch to beat the Mount Royal Stables Marine by a head. There were three starters and Marine was favorite. It was a dash of one mile and a furlong and was marked by a very slow pace. The start was prompt and fast and immediately after the break all three riders took their mounts in hand. Bad News Bob had taken the lead and Marine was racing in second position. Sun Hatter was on the outside and going along in bold fashion. They went to the half mile in :52!5 and the six furlongs in 1:17%. Rounding the far turn they were still under restraint and not until straightened out for the final run were they called on for their best efforts. At the top of the home stretch Sun Hatter was on even terms with Marine. Bad News Bob had dropped back and the race resolved itself into a battle between the first two. When the final test came Marine tired a bit and Sun Hatter, hanging on with determination, just lasted long enough. This was the closing day of the Montreal Jockey Clubs first meeting of 1931 and an immense gathering turned out to witness the sport. A well balanced program was provided for the occasion and stirring contests were in order. In several of the contests the result was decided in the final strides. A stirring stretch drive came with the running of the first race when Mrs. J. E. Nagles Zaidee came from behind in the final furlong to wear down the tiring Vacillate and to win going away by a scant length. Vacillate showed a keen turn of speed from the start, went to the front and drew away until she had a lead of three lengths rounding the far turn. After going half a mile she began to tire and at the furlong post her advantage over Zaidee was a scant length. In the last sixteenth Vacillate gave way and Zaidee, passing her, won going away. Ella Rufus, after breaking well, dropped out of it. She finished strongly under the whip and was up in time to beat Lew Black by a neck for third money. Galopin Diamond proved best of the band of Canadian-breds that went to the post in the second race. There was a change in riders, R. Feeney having the mount instead of Mitchell, who rode him in his previous start. Galopin Diamond was a good horse this afternoon. When the start came he broke in front and remained there. Wee Toddler II. raced in close company with the leader until straightened out in the home stretch, where he began drawing away and at the end had a margin of two lengths to spare. Wee Toddler II. was driving to beat Nipigon by a length for second place. Visionary was forced to stand a long, hard stretch drive to win the third race. She was ridden by R. Leishman, forced the pace the first quarter and, after racing Trifle off her feet, drew away in the stretch run. Agnes Sorel made several determined efforts to get to the leader, but Visionary had a little more left and hung on with great courage when put to punishment and won by a scant length. Agnes Sorel beat Marcheur by half a length for second place. Wrench, which was well fancied on the strength of a handy race the other day when he was beaten by half a length by June Moon, proved a disappointment. He was a contender for three furlongs and then dropped out of the picture. A . .
