REPENTANCE SURPRISES Defeats Vander Pool and Flying Heels in Miami Handicap. Displays Brilliant Speed in Running One Mile in 1 :36 25 New Track Record For Distance. MIAMI, Fla., Jan. 23. Repentance, the four-year-old son of Sun Flag and Follies, .which races for Mrs. Herbert Pulitzer, furnished one of the big surprises of the Hialeah Park meeting when he was winner of the Miami Beach Handicap, the big Saturday feature of the Miami Jockey Club. Mr. and Mrs. John Hay Whitney were on hand to see Mrs. Whitneys Lightning Bolt perform, but second was his portion and third fell to William M. Moores sprinter Vander Pool. Back of him came John J. Curtis Inaugural Handicap winner, Flying Heels, the top weight of the company, and the others to race were Hibala, Raccoon, Don Leon and Lady Broadcast, to finish in the jbrder named. It was a thrilling feature and, while Repentance paid the remarkable price of 5.70 for each two dollar wager, he made a new track record for one mile when he galloped it in 1:36. For the second Saturday of the meeting the crowd was the largest since the" big opening day and before the running of the third race the program supply had been exhausted. There were various luncheon parties in the club house before the opening of the program and new arrivals from the North were seen on the lawns. GOOD START. There was little delay in the starting of the Miami Beach Handicap, and the eight left in good alignment. Malley at once permitted Vander Pool to take the lead and, under restraint, he set a fast pace, with Flying Heels racing after him and Raccoon just showing the way to Repentance, which .was racing along on the inside and apparently with scant racing room. Luther evidently had been waiting with Lightning Bolt for he had the son of Wrack Well back from the leaders and under restraint in the early stages. Hibala was right with the Whitney colt, with Don Leon and Lady Broadcast in the rear. When Vander Pool had carried the pace to the half mile in :46, he had Flying Heels well flattened put, and as the six furlongs was reached in 1:10, it proved too rapid for the son jpf Flying Ebony under his burden of 126 pounds, and he tired. In the meantime Repentance was lucky to find room and slip through on the inside and come seriously into contention. By this time, Lightning Bolt was improving his position, but when Luther tried for the inside With the son of Wrack, he was not as fortunate as Callahan, and he had to take tip slightly and alter his course to the outside. FINISHES GAMELY. Vander Pool, despite the fast pace he set, hung on well after the stretch was reached, but Repentance had profited by his early rating and he came along with a rush in the final furlong that carried him past the line winner by three lengths. Lightning Bolt caught the Moore colt in that final furlong to beat him by a length for second place, and then came Flying Heels, two lengths back and only a head before Hibala. The race had a net value of ,530 to the Winner. The Golf Park Handicap brought an excellent contest and victory for Mrs. G. W. Lofts Mabla when she scored over Helian-thus, from the Brookmeade Stable, and Mrs. R. Pollards Uluniu saved third from Dewey Benthams Martis. It was a good start and when the six reached the back stretch Helianthus was showing the way and Brown Wisdom and Judge Schilling close at hand. Judge Schilling was on the outside of the company and rounding out of the back stretch he was threatening, but at the same time Mabla had moved up and as the stretch was reached Judge Schilling was in close quarters as the mare came over slightly frnd Kelsay was forced to take up. In the .Continued on twenty-ninth page. REPENTANCE SURPRISES .Continued from first page. meantime Mabla continued to wear down Helianthus until she was winner by a length and a half. The latter saved second place by three parts of a length and Martis also beat Judge Schilling over the line by reason of the interference he had suffered. The opening dash was six furlongs, for three-year-old platers, and it saw F. Wettach, Jr.s Line of Fire the winner from Gr. C. Winfreys Rabble and Mrs. M. Col-fords My Purchase was third. The latter was the one to cut out the running, but Rabble was not far back of him and Robertson had the Winfrey gelding under a stout restraint. Fields was in third place with Line of Fire and these three were destined to dominate all the running. The third race Was at a mile and a furlong, for ,000 platers and Tancred, from the Mapleton Stud, proved an easy winner over C. W. Bidwills Tea Cracker, with A. B. Gal-lahers Manassas just saving third from L. J. Sandrocks Druggist. There was a considerable delay at the post for which Tancred, Druggist and Valour 1L were wholly to blame. Then, when the start came, Tancred was off in motion, "but Druggist jumped in the air and was away slowly and Blue Cloud, was another that was off sluggishly. Manassas, leaving from the inside stall, went out to show the way, but Tancred was close after him and then came Tea Cracker. The others were a bit strung out when the back stretch was reached and Blue Cloud was last of the lot. Robertson was content to rate Tancred along within striking distance of Manassas and he made no effort to go to the front until the stretch was reached and Tea Cracker had moved up menacingly. There, he took up the son of American Flag and he quickly moved into the command to be home an easy winner by two lengths. Tea Cracker had beaten the tiring Manassas half a dozen lengths for second place and Druggist had closed considerable ground to be only another head away. W. C. Weants Wise Anne proved best of the two-year-olds that met in the quarter mile dash, and when she fought it out with Herbert M. Woolfs Lucille K. to be the winner she had equalled the track record of :22. Well back of the first two Okapi.from the Brookmeade Stable, saved third from Mose Lowensteins Meany. There was little time lost at the post, and the start was a good one for all but Billies Orphan, which was in the hands of an assistant starter, and she did not break with her company. Wise Anne left in full stride, and she was the one to cut out all the pace, and she made it a hot one. Lucille K. moved into second place rapidly, but she swerved to the inside in the final drive.- Wise Anne was the winner by half a length, but Lucille K. was a full seven lengths before Okapi, and the others followed along in badly strung out order. An upset came with the running of the sixth race when the heavily backed Playfole failed to make good. Rather a timid filly, Ployfple had the inside post position, and when the barrier was sprung she "was slow to leave. She was immediately surrounded by .horses and never extended herself after that. The winner turned up in Fredrick, a colt that won here earlier in the meeting. Racing well up with the pacemakers to the stretch turn, Fredrick moved up and passed Regula Baddun at the top of the home stretch, and at the finish had to be ridden out to stall off Bay Angon. The pair finished a length apart. On Sir, a slashing looker by Waygood, from the J. D. Norris, Jr. stable, was third. This fellow went a long ways. A bit slow to get into his stride, he raced out in the middle of the" track the entire journey and covered lots more ground than either of the first twQ that beat him.
