I------ - - NEW ORLEANS, La., Jan. 23 More resplendent, complete, comfortable and inviting than ever before, the Louisiana Jockey Clubs Fair Grounds, New Orleans senior race course, opens Monday for a season of forty-eight days, concluding Saturday, March 19. Great preparations for the meeting have been made and in planning for it, those in charge of the destinies of the picturesque and popular racing place were as in other years, very much bent upon meeting the particular fancies of the New Orleans and visiting racing public with the result that a number of innovations will be offered for approval or disapproval when the gates swing open Monday afternoon. The usual high standard of quality racing is assured and the widely diversified sport programmed will bring into competition the colors of a large percentage of the most prominent owners and stables on the American turf. Stars in all divisions will have championship opportunities in the series of stakes and handicaps to be run during the eight weeks and when the curtain is rung down,- equine kings and queens in all classes may be well out of the vale of dispute. Very much a purely sporting proposition with Col. E. R. Bradley, Kentuckys nationally famous sportsman and principal owner of the Fair Grounds, the outcome of the meeting as regards profit or loss is of small importance and while conditions are such that receipts may not equalexp enditures, the eagerness with which the season has been awaited presages a large attendance. This testimonial of appreciation for what he "and the Louisiana Jockey Club are doing for New Orleans in a racing amusement and advertising way may afford a measure of satisfaction for Colonel Bradley, offsetting whatever financial loss may be sustained. New features to be introduced include certificates at one dollar; the "daily double" or combination; a more spacious and elaborate field enclosure; races at three-quarters for older horses under claiming conditions, and others. The 0,000 added Louisiana Derby, formerly rim at Jefferson Park heads the numerous feature races programmed. This popular fixture for three-year-olds will be run for, the first time over the Fair Grounds track on the closing day of the meeting and the -contesting field will race one mile and an eighth. Other stakes and handicaps include the ,000 added Inaugural Handicap feature race on Mondays opening program; the ,000 added Pontchartrain Handicap; ,000 added Mardi Gras Handicap; ,500 added Edgewater Gulf Hotel Claiming Sweepstakes; ,000 added Jack L. Dempsey Memorial Handicap; ,000 added General Beaure- gard Claiming Sweepstake and ,000 added New Orleans Handicap, all for three-year-olds and over; the ,000 added Liam T. Maccosgair Sweepstake for two-year-olds and ,000 added Derby Trial Handicap and ,000 added Rex Handicap for three-year-olds.
