LAST ATTEMPT took the lead with a rush on the back stretch and, increasing his advantage on the far turn, tired in the closing eighth and was under extreme pressure to hold EL PUMA safe. The latter began in a tangle, moved up from last position at the half-mile post into second place on the turn and, continuing gamely, was wearing down the winner. PLAYBILL, hard urged throughout, outlasted DISCOBOLUS. The latter also closed a big gap. GHOST DANCER quit. INCESSANT and TOM MAR suffered interference and were pulled up in the final quarter. DRY RIDGE began fast and, under a hustling ride, drew away in the first sixteenth and held sway thereafter. STRAIT JACKET responded gamely in the final eighth and came through between the leaders, outlasting MIKE REYNOLDS. The latter began well and secured a clear passage all the way. SMOKE CLOUD, slow to get going, finished fastest of all. WOCO began alertly, but swerved to the inside and had to be pulled up sharply; came again when straightened out, but was in close quarters in the final seventy yards. SWAGGER STICK and KING HOLLIS were crowded back and forced to pull up when WOCO crossed in front of them at the start. Scratched Opinion, 113. KNOWLTON began in a tangle, was rated behind the .early pace under hard restraint until the stretch turn, where he went into contention with a rush while circling the others and, wearing down PARNELL BOUND, outlasted him in the final drive. PARNELL BOUND outbroke the others, was rated in front while saving ground, held on gamely when challenged and just failed to last. DOUBLE HEART, prominent all the way, tired when placed under punishment and swerved next to the inner rail in the stretch. DEDICATE quit badly in the last eighth. The latter was blocked sharply on the stretch turn, but went to the outside in the stretch and finished resolutely. MONTANARO showed the most early speed. BIRD OF PREY showed speed for seven-eighths, but tired. TACK suffered minor interference.
