CUT FAIR GROUNDS PURSES Claiming Race Values Reduced From ,000 to 00 Feature . Events Not Affected. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 1. Beginning with the racing of February 4, the tenth day of the meeting, purse values of claiming races at the Fair Grounds during the present meeting will be 00 per race, a reduction of 00 from the minimum purse during the first nine days. Allowance races, handicaps, stakes and other features will not be affected by this adjustment in purse distribution, announced Sunday by Col. John P. Sullivan, chairman of the board, following a meeting of the Louisiana Jockey Club directors, executive committee and board of governors. The Jockey Club officials authorized the following statement: "Taking cognizance of the tremendous financial losses sustained at Fair Grounds during the week ending Saturday last, certain of the horsemen voluntarily called at the executive offices and suggested a reduction in the daily purses, effective at the. close of the present book. "This generous act, prompted by a sincere desire to aid- in the curtailment of operating expenses of the Souths greatest race course, is further a graceful tribute of friendship to our executive vice-president, Col. E. R. Bradley, who for many years was president of the Thoroughbred Horsemens Association, and evidences the horsemens keen interest in the present and future of the Fair Grounds. ".Therefore .beginning Thursday, February 4th, the daily purse offerings of the Louisiana Jockey Club will affect the claiming races only, which are hereby fixed at 00 instead of ,000 per race."
