COMING FAIR GROUNDS STAKES Best Horses in Training for Rich. Crescent City Races. Louisiana Derby Heads List With Rex, Mardi Gras, New Orleans and Other Handicaps Scheduled. NEW ORLEANS, La., Feb. 1. Americas foremost thoroughbreds in training are being pointed here for the various stake engagements to be run during the winter months at the Fair Grounds, including the 0,000 added Louisiana Derby, closing feature event March 19. Elaborate preparations are being made to handle sport crowds for the carnival festivities, and officials of the Louisiana Jockey Club are co-operating with civic organizations to make this New Orleans greatest epoch of amusement for visiting tourists. King Horse and the King of the Carnival of Mardi Gras will join hands as they always have in the past to make it pleasant and inviting to everybody. Of course, clean racing plays a prominent part in this drama of the turf, and such sterling officials as Christopher J. FitzGer-ald, presiding steward, and J. B. Campbell, associate steward, are assets to the sport. Col. Edward R. Bradley, principal stockholder in the Louisiana Jockey Club, must be complimented for obtaining such turfmen to guide the destinies of the sport. With such men in the stewards stand, the public is assured of no turr scandals, and they, no doubt, have restored public confidence. Among the leading stakes to be run at the Fair Grounds this season are the Rex Handicap, with ,000 added, for three-year-olds, at six furlongs, to be run February 6; the Mardi Gras Handicap, with ,000 added, for three-year-olds and over, one mile and a sixteenth, February 9; the Edge-water Gulf Hotel Sweepstake, with ,500 added, for four-year-olds and over, one mile and a sixteenth, February 13; the Jack L.
