AUSTRALIAN RIDERS POPULAR W. Elliott and E. Martin Gain Favor With Racegoers at Agua Caliente Experienced Horsemen. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, March 15. Those two Australian lads, William Francis Elliott and Edwin James Martin, who crossed the broad Pacific to help train Phar Lap for the 0,000 Agua Caliente Handicap, are making quite a hit with racing fans hereabouts. Not only are they pleasant little men, but they know what it is all about when it comes to riding thoroughbreds. Agua Caliente fans had their first glimpse of Elliott and Martin in action during the past few weeks and have placed the stamp of approval on both. Unlike other foreign Jockeys who have journeyed to our shores, they believe in hustling their mounts away from the barrier, a procedure that does not seem to be popular in Europe. Both demonstrated that they are alert post boys and know the shortest way around the track. Their weakness, particularly that of Elliot, appears to be in wielding the whip. Recently Elliott rode Pookanaka, Mir-vin Louise and Jotiva, three very cheap animals. Pookanaka, making his first start in eighteen months, was so unruly at the barrier that he was placed on the outside. Elliott got him off fast, took a nice hold on him and was just about to send him to the front when Pookanaka broke down epi badly it is feared he may have to be destroyed. On Mirvin Louise, also a bad actoiv he was off in the first flight, stole a four lengths lead around the first turn, but was on a "short horse" and Mirvin Louise quit On Jotiva, one ol the most sluggish animals extant, he was away as well as could be expected and saved much ground by hugging the rail to. have the animal close up at the finish. Martin rode Ragtime, one of the extrema outsiders in a race recently. He clung to the rail all the way and when danger loomed up on the last two turns eased back just enough to avoid serious trouble, yet not take his horse off stride. While Elliott appeared a trifle weak with the whip while urging Mirvin Louise in the stretch, Martin swung the lash with considerable force and although considered an inferior pilot to Elliott in his homeland, he may prove just as popular at Agua Caliente as his fellow countryman. Both boys have announced that they will be active .in the saddle during their stay at Agua Caliente, and it is likely that they will obtain their share of mounts, for they havo the stuff and will, undoubtedly, improve aa they become acquainted with the various owners and more familiar with the course.
