BERTJOHNS DERBY WORKOUT Impresses Good Judges by His Manner in Galloping One Mile and an Eighth. 1 NEW ORLEANS, La., March 15. Fearful of giving him a bit too much racing before filling his engagement in the Louisiana Derby, to be run over one mile and an eighth, trainer William Hurley withdrew Col. E. R. Bradleys Bertjohn, probable favorite for Derby honors, from the Post Parade Purse, todays feature race, and worked him the Derby route. The son of Broadway Jones was on the track about mid-morning and, with James Smith, who will ride him in Saturdays race, in the saddle, went the route, under smooth rating and restraint, in 1:55. The trial concluded his training and, aside from the regular short speed sharpener Friday morning, he is fit and ready to attempt to win honors in the coveted feature, twice won by starters from his owners stable. Hurley also gave Battering Ram, one of the stables reserve candidates, a useful trial, the son of Bubbling Over going one mile in 1:44. The skillful Smith rated Bertjohn over the first half-mile in :49 and three-quarters in 1:15. He reached the end of the mile in 1:42 and, quickening his pace, ran the last eighth of the long route in :12. The manner in which he finished leaves no room to doubt that he will be well suited by the long Derby distance. Hurley has great confidence in Bertjohn and, barring adverse luck in the race, looks for him to make a great, if not successful, challenge for the prize. He is held in high esteem by the best of judges and has as big a Derby following as any candidate. With A. B. Letelliers Sazerac, S. W. La-brots Springsteel, J. Leiters Prince Hotspur and Princess Camelia, P. C. Thompsons Crystal Prince, J. J. Robinsons Renaissance and Bengal Tiger, another of the Bradley Derby eligibles under colors in todays principal race, the day was a busy one for Derby aspirants. Lucky Tom, stable companion of Renaissance, is scheduled for a final distance work Thursday morning. Trainer H. C. Riddle sent him one mile Monday in 1T45.
