SPRINGSTEEL SURE STARTER To Carry S. W. Labrots Colors in Ohio State Derby — Other Prominent Candidates. CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 26.— Springsteel, S. W. Labrots Ohio State Derby candidate, will be shipped Monday from Toronto to carry his colors in the Derby. Racing secretary Julius Reeder received word from trainer William Irvine stating that Spring-steel positively would start in the Ohio Derby, which is to be run at Bainbridge a week from Saturday and that he probably would send Open Hearth here to compete in the same event. Open Hearth ran second to Lucky Tom, beaten a nose in the Louisiana Derby at New Orleans last winter and many regarded him the better horse, but for interference in the last jump by jockey Pascuma, who was astride Lucky Tom, which is also coming for the Ohio Derby. Springsteel was the conqueror of Tick On in his first start this spring in Maryland. The Derby trial, which is to be run at Bainbridge Saturday, will draw a select field and give the fans a line on the candidates on the grounds and probably will result in the elimination of several of the thirty-nine which have been nominated for the race. The entry of Springsteel, Open Hearth, Economic, Stepenfetchit, Lucky Tom, Renaissance, Over Time and several other of the more prominent candidates undoubtedly will result in the withdrawal of several of the lesser lights. Racing secretary Reeder announced that the condition books will be issued next Monday, which will include eight days of racing beginning Tuesday. There are no changes in the general line-up of the purse distribution with the exception of the cheaper claiming races, for the which the purses will be 00.
