HIKE IS LEADER AT AURORA « Man Who Saddled Most Winners in 1931 Takes Down Six Purses. ■ Mrs. Emil Denemark, With Burning Up, Ranks High in Owner Column — King Has High Riding Average. ♦ J. D. Mikel, Illinois turfman, who led American trainers last year in the score of winners sent to the post, aggregating sev-entry-two, won more purse money with his horses than any other owner who raced a string at Aurora during the meeting which closed May 21. He saddled six winners, was second with seven and third with two, and his winnings amounted to ,750. O. L. Foster tied Mikel in the trainer list, with six winners, but three of these were for other owners and Fosters own three won only ,050. Mikel got a pretty fair start on some of the other owners with horses that h« brought here in first class condition from California, including the rejuvenated Scimitar, which finished in the money in the last Agua Caliente Handicap, for the second time in this fixture; War Glow, Red Diamond, Foolhardy and Laurie. War Glow later went into the Foster stable and joined Love Apple as a winner for this owner. Mrs. Emil Denemark was one of the leading Aurora owners, ranking third in money won, just behind C. E. Davison, their winnings amounting to ,350 and ,300, respectively. Mrs. Denemarks Burning Up won the Inaugural Handicap and the May Blossoms Handicap. Her other winners were i Blackstrap and Rough Rider. Davisons winners were Dark Ayr, Andromeda, Bag Smasher, Cesare and Sister Mary. Other winners of more than ,000 included C. W. Moore, A. G. Tarn, Superior Stable, Mrs. A. Manale and F. G. Haller. Mr. Haller owns War Saint, the gelded son of St. James, which is now racing in such good form, having won his three starts at Aurora. War Glow was the only other horse which won in excess of ,000 and he started four times. C. King was easily the leader of the jockeys, with twenty-five winning mounts, eighteen seconds and ten thirds. His average of 24 per cent was far better than that of any of the other riders. J. McCoy rode thirteen winners and T. Salazar twelve. Aurora ran for eighteen days, distributing to the horsemen a total of 9,600, a daily average of approximately ,533.
