Y., May 26.— Saddle stars of other days will return to action in the name of charity when old-time jockeys will ride in the lead ponies race, an added attraction to the program drafted by racing secretary Schaumburg for the Nassau County Unemployment Relief Day, at Belmont Park June 6. This event calls for former jockeys now holding trainers licenses, to ride stable ponies, thoroughbreds excluded. The distance will be three-sixteenths of a mile, approximately the distance from the home turn to the judges stand through the straightaway in front of the stands. The New York Turf Writers Association will present a silver cup to the winning rider. Old time riders have taken to the idea enthusiastically, and the list of probable jockeys who will perform includes Johnny Loftus, Joe Notter, Willie Knapp, Bennett Creech, Clyde Phillips, "Happy" Buxton, Joe Bauer, "Specs" Crawford, famous steeplechase rider, J. J. Byer, George Arvin, Vincent Powers, George Carroll, Norman Kennedy, E. J. Hodgson, James Fitzsimmons, Jr., Andy Schuttinger, Roy Walden and William Harris. Ponies are being donated from the leading racing establishments, including the Green-tree Stable, C. V. Whitney, W. R. Coe, Belair Stud, Wheatley Stable and others. The horsemens committee, which includes Max Hirsch, James Fitzsimmons, T. J. Healey, A. J. Joyner and other leading trainers, is arranging other features. It is planned to parade thoroughbred stars of today and other equine generations between races under the silks to which they brought gold and glory. Racing secretary Victor Schaumburg expects to have the completed charity day program for distribution within a few days. He announced that the Nassau County Handicap, which will occupy the principal position on the card, will carry ,500 in added money instead of the originally planned ,-200 purse, in order to attract the best horses on the grounds into its list. Tom Healey will act as starter of the lead pony race. George Cassidy has donated the use of his barrier and men for the occasion, while A. J. Joyner, James Fitzsimmons and Max Hirsch will serve as judges for the event. •
