j I j j | f . * 2. t j c , t , r , , j t 1 A J j , , j j 1 I ] NO DAILY DOUBLES" AT HAWTHORNE Hawthorne is gradually shaping its policy for its annual meeting, which opens August It has been definitely decided that there will be no daily doubles. As Hawthorne will be the only major race track open in the Middle West during August and will, as a consequence, be host to practically every big stable in the West and many of those from the East, the management has decided to give eight races each day so as to provide racing for as many horses as possible. A letter was received from Joseph McLennan, the racing secretary, stating that he would meet judge Murphy at Belmont Park next week, and together they would go over the Hawthorne Cup entries with eastern horsemen. The report that Twenty Grand was coming back to the races was cheering news to the management. The late Jimmie Rowe had promised the horse for the race last year when the colt went wrong. President Schank, superintendent Ben Miller and judge Murphy spent the morning at Hawthorne going over the improvements necessary for the year. Except for decorating the infield, the plant is ready for racing now. Applications have already been received from sufficient horses to fill the barns, and the pruning knife must be set to work, particularly on the big establishments, so as to give everybody an opportunity to get inside the grounds.
