LABROT LEADER IN CANADA Wins Most at Woodbine Through Two Victories of Tred Avon. Qucensway Big Winner for B. W. R. Cowle, Who Is Close Second in First Meeting Mrs. Clarks Crumpler Leads Jumpers Although R. W. R. Cowie jumped off to a good lead in Canadian racing when his Queensway won the opening day Kings Plate at Woodbine Park, Toronto, S. W. La-.brot, by force of numbers and consistent winners, overtook him "before the seven-day meeting closed and finished the first week ahead by ,055 to Cowies ,455. , Labrots principal winners were Tred Avon, Springsteel and the two-year-old Happy Anne. Tred Avon, a four-year-old filly, by Sir Greysteel, sire of the three-year-old Springsteel, won the King Edward Gold Cup Handicap and the Toronto Cup Handicap. Queensway won practically the entire Cowie total by capturing, in addition to the Kings Plate, the Breeders Stakes. The Seagram Stable, always a large winner in Canada, is listed third in the list of early winners with ,950. Khorasan won the Connaught Cup, Shady Well the William Hendrie Memorial Handicap, and Solace the Prince of Wales Handicap. King OConnor, a first-time starter, was a large contributor by finishing second in the Kings Plate. Mrs. F. A. Clarks jumper, Crumpler, won two stakes and more money than any other horse at Woodbine, except Queensway and Tred and therefore was responsible for Mrs. Clarks high ranking in the owner column. Crumplers victories were in the Fraser Memorial Steeplechase Handicap and the Woodbine Steeplechase Handicap. C. V. Whitneys horses won four races and a flock of seconds and thirds, their total in money earned reaching ,125. The Whitney winners were Clotho, in two races; Slapstick, and Trimmer. Owners whose names have figured prominently in Canadian racing statistics in recent years reappear in the first 1932 list. J. E. Smallman won three races at Woodbine, H. C. Hatch two and R. H. New one. H. G. Bedwells Fair Jack was off to a good start. H. Giddings, trainer for Cowie, and W. Irvine, trainer for Labrot, each saddled six winners and topped the trainers. Jockey F. Mann rode more than 50 per cent of his mounts to victory, seven out of thirteen. J. H Burke won with, six out of fifteen. R. J. Fisher had only four mounts and won with two. Twenty favorites were successful in the first Woodbine meeting, the choices scoring in 41 per cent of the races. This average is slightly above normal.
