April the Fifths victory was loudly acclaimed by the "hoi polloi." After owner-trainer Tom Walls, the ex-policeman, now a film star, had led his horse back to the unsaddling enclosure, he was summoned to the royal box to receive the congratulations of King George and Queen Mary on achieving the greatest honor the turf offers. No horse in the Derby field was better trained for the gruelling test than April the Fifth, the first Epsom-trained horse in almost one hundred years to win the Derby. Walls and his friends, mostly theatrical people, profited handsomely by betting on the horse he owns in partnership with Sidney McGregor, who was also a partner with S. L. Whitelaw in the breeding of April the Fifth. Nor was April the Fifths jockey, F. Lane, who rode a clever race to win his first classic, forgotten. He was loudly cheered and congratulated on riding the best race of his career, his signal success being particularly gratifying to his brother knights of the pigskin, among whom Lane is an idol.
