Rose j -.--.4 LATONIA, Ky., June 29 Osculator, one of the outstanding three-year-olds of the season and second under the racing silks of W. R. Coe of New York in the American Derby, Belmont Stakes and Withers Stakes, will invade Kentucky for the first time when he fills his important engagement in the Latonia Derby, at one mile and a half, to be renewed here Saturday. Benny Creech and Hugh Fontaine, trainer and manager, respectively, of the Coe horses, have arranged to ship the crack son of Pompey and some others from Arlington Park Thursday night. The addition of Osculator to the field adds much to Saturdays golden jubilee running of this race, one of the oldest and most popular fixtures in this country. In the contest he will encounter such other of the foremost in his division as Mrs. John Hay Whitneys Stepenfetchit, J. W. Y. Martins Dark Hope, W. F. Knebelkamps Delivered, C. B. Shaffers Marmion, A. Bar-telsteins Yonkel, Knebelkamp and Morris Adobe Post, the Leiter estates Prince Hotspur and possibly George Collins Thistle Ace and one or two others. Without attempting to make any excuses for his colt, trainer Creech always will believe that if the track had been fast or muddy, rather than boggy or cuppy, Osculator would have triumphed in the recent American Derby. It was explained that when he did tire in the late stages of that race the cupping out of the track probably caused him to stop much faster than would have been the case on almost any other variety of track. At that, the sturdy and consistent bay finished the American Derby mile and one-quarter comfortably in the van of Prince Continued on second page. i FIELD FOR LATONIA DERBY Continued from first page. Hotspur, Stepenfetchit and others ready to oppose him in the new and longer test provided by the Latonia Derby. "Big Jim" Healy, trainer of Mrs. J. H. "Whitneys large stable, looks for Stepenfetchit to make a great, if not successful, bid for Latonia Derby honors. This son of The Porter approaches Saturdays race in top form and those who witnessed his recent fine trial at a mile and one-quarter at Arlington Park are confident that he will come into his own in Saturdays race. Stepenfetchit took down third honors in the Kentucky Derby. The fiftieth running of Latonias principal summer attraction will not lack a "dark horse," as Dark Hope, the unsexed brown son of Traumer Dinahmeur, which will carry the J. W. Y. Martin colors, is rather securely lodged in that berth. Dark Hope is one of the real up and coming three-year-olds, and when he breezed a mile and one-quarter in 2:06 at Arlington Tuesday it marked one of the smartest gallops of the season. A. Hutchins, trainer of Dark Hope, has engaged J. Smith to ride the gelding Saturday. With a popular-sized and closely matched field assured, the usual keen interest is noted on every side and the Latonia management has every reason to believe that Derby Day will prove one of the biggest of the year at the local track.
