EAST CAPTURES WESTS PRIZES M. L. -Schwartz, With Derby Winner, Leads at Washington Park. Audley Farm Second With Gallant Knight and Hilena Bartelstein and Knebelkamp Stables Meet With Success. Eastern owners, now pointing their big guns at the rich stakes contested in Illinois, ecored heavily during the Washington Park meeting. Gustos American Derby was worth 8,200 to M. L. Schwartz and this amount was not approached by any other winning owner. The Audley Farm Stable took second place with 3,065, a large part of which was won by Gallant Knight in the Francis S. Peabody Memorial, and by Hilena in the Debutante Stakes, although there were several other winners in the Audley colors and this stable had more firsts, seconds and thirds in the aggregate than any other establishment. Among the most successful western owners were A. Bartelstein, E. R. Bradley, Knebelkamp and Morris and Albert Sabath. Sidney Grant won the Robert M. Sweitzer Handicap for Bartelstein, who also sent to the post the latest western speed sensation Polydorous, for three winning races. I Say won three races for Sabath. Spanish Play won two and was four times second for Knebelkamp and Morris. W. S. Kilmer and W. R. Coe found the sport at Washington Park profitable. It was Kilmers star filly Suntica which won the Illinois Oaks, defeating the Audley Farms Late Date and Albert Sabaths Illinois candidate I Say. Osculators second in the American Derby was worth more to Coe than anything else gained by his colors, although he had two winners and a number of other seconds and thirds. Spanish Play was the biggest money-winner among the strictly western horses, with four victories and four seconds, worth ,100. This horse was second to Gallant Knight, when the Audley star established new track records for the mile and the mile and a quarter, and he was likewise second to Polydorus when the Bartelstein racer gave the meetings first record-breaking performance over the distance of a mile. Mrs. S. H. Fairbanks Gold Step was the biggest surprise winner among those triumphant in the Washington Park features. Neglected in the betting, he defeated a large field, which included Silverdale and Polydorus, in the Washington Park Handicap on opening day. On opening day at Arlington Park he created a still greater sensation when he defeated Jamestown and a lot of other stars in the Arlington Inaugural. Three jockeys carried on an interesting struggle for riding supremacy without reaching a decision so far as winners were concerned. R. Jones, J. W. Smith and W. Wright rode sixteen winners each, Wright having the best of it in the percentage column as he had fewer mounts. Jones had more seconds than his rivals. C. E. Allen rode fourteen winners. K. Spence, saddling the Audley horses, was tied with A. A. Baroni for trainer honors, each saddling eight winners. A total of 21,990 was distributed during the thirty-day meeting, the daily average being 0,733. The leading owners, whose horses won in excess of ,000 follow: Owner. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Amt. Schwartz, M.
