THREATEN ONE MILE RECORD Equipoise, Jamestown and Spanish Play to Meet Today. Fast Track at Arlington Park May See Jack Highs Worlds Mark Lowered Close Race Expected. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., June 29. A fast track at Arlington Park Thursday afternoon may see the passing of the worlds record for one mile, over a circular course. In the Delavan Purse, over the Hertz course, programmed as the fifth race, C. V. Whitneys great Equipoise will clash with two others from among Americas finest thoroughbreds in George D. Wideners Jamestown and Spanish Play, from the stable of Knebelkamp and Morris. The Delavan Purse is serving as a preparatory effort for the Stars and Stripes Handicap to be run Monday, when these fast horses will meet other outstanding contenders for the division championship; Equipoise will carry 128 pounds and be ridden by "Sonny" Workman, Jamestown will have up 118 pounds and his pilot will be either Linus McAtee or Tod Leischmann. Spanish Play is the lightweight of the field at 106 pounds and his rider will be Charles Landdlt, his regular jockey. Equipoise, winner of all his four starts this season, including the Harford, Toboggan and Metropolitan Handicaps, proclaimed his readiness this morning by a turn of sharp speed that saw him bound over the half-mile distance in :46, the quarter in :22 and the three-eighths in :34. The handsome chestnut four-year-old has proved himself a first-class weight carrier and his impost is not expected to reduce his speed to any extent in striving to lower Jack Highs mark of 1:35 for the mile. Trainer A. J. Joyner is confident Jamestown will display sharp improvement over his performance in the Arlington Inaugural Handicap, considering that the Monday race was his first of the season and the added conditioning is just what he required. Furthermore, he has four pounds less to carry. The weights also give Spanish Play a wonderful chance, racing secretary Joseph McLennan said, in view of the colts splendid effort in running second to Gallant Knight last week when the Audley star ran a mile in 1:35 and again a few days later when he went a mile and a quarter in 2:02, both of which made new track records for Washington Park. In the mile race Spanish Play carried 118 pounds and in the longer affair , Continued on second page. With a dozen pounds off, or the equivalent of four lengths in handicapping circles, Spanish Play shapes up as a dangerous rival for Equipoise .and Jamestown, it was pointed out. Two other outstanding events are on Thursdays program, the monetary feature being the Winnetka Stakes, with ,500 added, for juvenile fillies, over five and one-half furlongs and the Ravinia, for fillies and mares, over seven-eighths. In the Winnetka, Wise Anne may carry the colors of W. C. Weant in a duplication of her victorious effort in the Clipsetta Stakes at Latonia last Saturday. A
