SHADY WELL AN EASY WINNER e Has Little Competition in Running of Maple Leaf Stakes. Foggy Dew Leads Earthen Jar, Seagram Cast-Off, for Second Place Khaki John Repeats at Woodbine. TORONTO, Ont., Sept. 28. The Maple Leaf Stakes, having its thirty-ninth running, was the piece de resistance on Wednesdays program at Woodbine. The Maple Leaf has an added value of ,000 and is exclusively for three-year-old and four-year-old fillies over the one mile and one-sixteenth. The Seagram Stables Shady Well was returned the easiest sort of winner, scoring by a dozen lengths from Foggy Dew, which races for J. B. Miller. Earthen Jar, a Seagram Stable cast-off, earned third for Mrs. T. Murphy. The victory of Shady Well enriched the coffers of the Seagram establishment to the extent of ,405. There was a delay at the post caused by the bad behavior of Foggy Dew, but when the start came it was a good one, with Speywood taking command. Shady Well was slow to settle into her best stride and ran into some trouble at the first turn, and Legere was forced to take the daughter of Purple Shade up twice before she was able to stride freely. Speywood sped along out in front and enjoyed a wide margin as the field began to run through the back stretch. Shady Well was taken to the outside and moved up fast and soon raced into second place. Leaving the back stretch, Shady Well appeared ready to go to the front at the asking, but Legere elected to wait until nearing the quarter pole before releasing the Seagram three-year-old "from restraint. Once given a free rein Shady Well bounded to the front and drew out with ridiculous ease all through the stretch run. Speywood had faltered from carrying the pacemaking burden and surrendered second place to Earthen Jar. The latter managed to hold to the place until the final few yards, where Foggy Dew came on the outside, to take that part of the award. Shady Well was worked out to a mile and a" half and traversed the distance in 2:39. Dunrock accounted for his first purse in some time when he raced to a front-running victory in the one mile and a furlong of the fifth. This test, ,200 top and bottom claiming affair, attracted the limit number of starters. Isostasy, one with a known liking for the soft under-footing, raced to the place and Phil R. was third. Black Jewel caused some interference at the start when she ducked to the inside, forcing Big Storm, Make Believe and Herendeen to take up sharply. Paradise was alert at the barrier and sent Dunrock into the van at once, opened up daylight on his nearest attendant in the run to the first turn and, dominating the running all the way, was never seriously menaced. As Visionary Hour, Phil R. and Torealong tired of the chase, Isostasy moved up on the inside and gained second place by a half length from Phil R.
