AMERICAN TRAINER IS KILLED. Joseph Frank Turner Dies After Automobile Accident in Rome Leading Trainer of Italy. ROME, Italy, Oct. 4. Joseph Frank Turner, fifty-two, an American who became famous in France and Italy as a trainer and breeder of thoroughbreds, was fatally injured in an automobile accident here last night. A taxi in which he wa3 riding- was struck by another car and hurled across the sidewalk against a building. Mr. Turner was crushed and died shortly afterward. Mr. Turner lived in Milan and did much to develop racing in Italy. Joseph Frank Turner was more generally known as Frank Turner. He was the con of John Turner of Philadelphia, who was a noted trotting horse driver, trainer and owner thirty years and more ago. He held the lines over many of the best trotters of his time. Although never a driver, his son assisted him. Frank Turner came to New York with William Snyder and became associated with the stable of Frank R. Hitchcock, here and abroad. He was remarkably successful in France and Italy. For many years he trained for the largest stables in Italy. He was the leading winning trainer there in 1930 and 1931. A few years ago the king of Italy was said to have decorated Mr. Turner for his services in developing; thoroughbred racing in Italy. --4 1
